Why do people use "ur" and other shortenings?

I really can't understand why so many people use "ur" and other shortenings. It seems VERY unprofessional to me and makes it seem like the poster is inexperienced and young. What are "ur" thoughts?

I agree with you that it is unprofessional and makes the poster seem young and inexperienced. It is also difficult for me to read. It takes me twices as long to read the shortened text because I have to try to figure out what they are saying.

in an email I cant stand it but in Instant messaging its just nature. people are always in a hurry that shortens it

Sometimes I do it just purely out of habit. I do shorten words like that when Im chatting through instant messenger or text messaging someone and it just becomes a habit.
