I know they all taste the same but sometimes I'm in the mood for spaghetti, sometimes penne, and sometimes rotini. What's your favorite and do you use different shapes for different recipes?

I like bow tie pasta. WHen i was at a olive garden they had a more complicated name for that. I just like it because it is an interesting shape.

Maybe you're thinking of the italian name for bowtie pasta "farfalle" (means butterfly). I like that shape too...it's cute and holds the sauce well.

Hearts. I love them and all the colors they come in, especially the pink hearts. They must be made with beet juice, but you cannot taste it. Blessings, M&M

I like the different colors too. I think you're right, they use beet juice and tomato for red and spinach for green. I don't think I've ever tasted any difference either.

Mmm, I like thin spaghetti... or the tri-color spirals, those are my favorite to make pasta salad with. I also like the little wagon wheel shapes, they hold a lot of sauce. I really just like pasta!

I forgot about the wagon wheel. I haven't had those in years. I like the tri-color for pasta salad also.

You know, they don't actually "taste" the same. I personally am not a huge fan of spaghetti but will eat it with Alfredo and once in a while get in the mood for it with sauce. I love elbows and spirals. I use them for various things depending on what I'm putting over them. Lasagna noodles have their own texture and thickness that is perfect for.. well lasagna! LOL The spirals are great for pasta salads, seem to hold the dressing better.

I love shell pasta. My husband's favorite is rigatoni. I love the shells because the sauce gets inside, so you get the flavor of the sauce and the pasta in every bite. I use shell pasta to make pasta with steak. In casserole-type dishes, I'll usually use zita or penne. When my husband makes a pot of sauce, we'll cook up rigatoni and have chicken parmesan with that.

I don't use shells very often but that's a good point about the sauce. I like using penne in casseroles too.

Penne pasta with alfredo sauce and a little oregano does it for me everytime. Add some chicken on top of it and you have yourself a gourmet meal!

I love every kind of pasta. Different occassions call for different shapes! I like to make penne with chicken parmesan, for instance. And I like elbows for macaroni and cheese. I'm not a huge fan of twisty, twirly pastas. Bowties go nice with a creamy alfredo sauce.

Different pasta shapes are indeed intended for different sauces. For example, ziti or rotini is suggested for chunky sauces so that the chunks get stuck inside when ou eat it. I don't always follow these rules, but I must say that I like ziti best. It's easier to handle. As for the longer twirling types of pasta, I prefer linguini.

I like all kinds of pasta. But I always end up ordering anything with farfalle. So I guess that would be my favorite one. :)

Well, living in italy has opened up a whole new world of pasta shapes. they're practically thousands. In this country, people are very particular about which sauce goes with which shape. For example, a light sauce like one with seafood should never be served with penne or rigatoni, but rather a thin spaghetti or linguine. Somehow, Italians have a sixth sense about it. my favorite shape is probably, penne rigate, the penne with the ridges that hold the cream sauce i love so much!
