What would you be doing if the computer or internet had not been invented?

Computers and the internet are such great inventions that effect most everyone's life in one way or another whether they use a computer or not. How would your life be different if there was no such invention? Would you be reading, typing out letters, doing another hobby? Would you have the free time that you now have? What do you think?

That's a really good question. Me? I'd be probably typing, or watching TV, or reading, or swimming. A few of my favorite things to do besides using the computer.

It is something to ponder. I think we are getting so used to having this convenience that we don't stop and think how our lives would be different if there was no such invention. I would probably be reading because I enjoy reading.

That sounds like a good idea. I would catch up on a lot of reading myself; those books that I plan to get to and never do.

Yes, I think we are all guilty of taking the computer and internet for granted, do you realize how many people go crazy when they lose the internet connection for an hour for example, or people going cold turkey without it! I would be spending more time reading or watching television. Before the internet I used to write a lot of poetry and short stories, but now I never do that creative stuff any more. Yes I am addicted to the internet and my computer!

I coincidentally got the chance to see what I would do without internet after I started that discussion. I was without internet service for close to two months where I live here in Nicaragua, through no fault of my own. Fortunately, I still had my computer so it wasn't totally "cold turkey." I went to the internet cafe about once a week to catch up on emails also, but I have to say, I missed my internet service in a huge way. I was so bored without it for that length of time. So I can live without it, but I surely don't want to. I think I am also less creative than I was before I was addicted to the internet.

Of course, they were happy too. They just had other ways of working or entertaining themselve.

Oh, Caribe, I just love the use of the computer. Before I purchased my own I would visit the public library and use theirs. But that got old quick. But I love the computer. I can email, fax, instant message, copy dvds, cds, movies, books, listen to my favorite music watch dvds and movies. I can make posters and greeting cards, and calendars. Wow the list just goes on and on. And another thing I can make my own movies and print out pictures. I don't have to go to a professional photo company anymore. I don't have to visit the post office as much. I could use my web cam to view others and while viewing I can talk with them. Also I can sell them over the computer.

We have become used to computers and the internet caribe, but I can also remember the days long before either of them was ever thought of. Some of the things I did in the pre-computer, pre-internet days I still do today, although not as much obviously. If there was no internet or computers, then I would be reading - and despite these two "new" inventions I still do that every day anyway - because we can never learn enough and one way to learn is to read. Also embroidery, but that is not done as much now although I still enjoy it, despite the fact that I now need glasses and a strong light to see it properly. LOL Hand written letters to some of my older friends, and I still do that with them anyway, as I find it much more personal than sending an email. That might be my age and thought process though. There are other friends of course who I keep in contact with through emails as well as phone of course. I would probably spend much more time sorting out my old stamp collection than I am at present, and it is in quite a mess now. Definately more time spent on cooking, although only when our son was home. With just my husband and I there is no point in cooking large meals, desserts etc - they are not too good for our waistlines, so best to avoid them, but our son is more fit and active than we are. :) Watching Television of course, but although I have never been a big fan of it there are still some programs that I do enjoy watching. I am sure that if we didn't have a computer or the internet, then I could easily find a few more programs that I would enjoy. Personally there would be a lot of things that I could do if I didn't have the computer and internet. I can honestly say that when we are travelling I actually do a number of things that I have mentioned here. Although I have taken my old laptop with me in the past, I seldom got on the internet while away. Maybe if I had a better, i.e. new and faster, model laptop then I would get online more often but that is subjective really.

Going to the library seems to almost be a thing of the past now. I also enjoy reading. When I am reading a good book I don't want to put it down. As far as TV, I have it on but I get so involved with what I am doing on the internet until I forget to watch it. I will see a program start and later when I look up it is almost finished and I have no clue what it was about.

Well I am old enough to remember life without a computer and I would be doing what I did then. Watching more TV, reading, going out clubbing, writing letters and talking on the phone for hours. I am so glad the computer was invented though. It has been a fun ride and I am just happy to have been a part of watching it come to life!

I would probably be spending alot of time at the library. My kids homework is so complex to me, that I need a source to get information to help them, especially math. Without the Internet I would have to go to the library almost everyday.

Yes, isn't the internet a great source of information. I sometimes don't think we fully comprehend how very much it is helping us in our daily lives.

I would have more free time. I also do one stroke...and more time here means less time painting. Of course, I do have a wealth of knowledge at my finger tips, so I think the internet as made me a better educated person. I wouldn't write letters, I would use the phone.

I know what you mean. It has been a while since I did one stroke because I am always on here. But the internet has a lot of interesting information and I really enjoy it. I would rather use the phone than to write "snail mail", but I had rather email than use the phone.

Life would have been slow, we'll be writing letters and life would have been slow, but we'd be not as stressed as we are now (mainly for people who use computers and internet in their business)
