my cousin just went to a weight loss clinic and the doctor put her on an 800 calorie a day diet. and told her to burn 500 calories a day. so basically she's consuming 500 calories a day. this seems a little crazy to me. I know she's going to lose weight, but seems like its not too healthy Has anyone ever gotten put on a diet like this?

Do you mean she's on 300 calories??? That is too extreme. I don't count calories but I know I have cut back in my food intake. I also go to the gym for about two hours. I went from no excercise to two hours, all of a sudden. I would tell her to speak to a different doctor.

This is way too extreme. You're right, she will lose weight. But it will be because she is starving. This is not at all healthy. The minimum amount of calories for a healthy "diet" is 1200 calories/day, and most would even go slightly higher than that. This is the minimum that the body needs just to live and function normally; less than that is starvation. Even people who are on a low carb diet before gastric bypass surgery eat 1200-1500 calories a day. She didn't gain weight overnight, and she shouldn't lose it that fast, either. After the first few weeks, a loss of 1-2 pounds a week is healthy. The only thing he said that was accurate was that she should exercise; that's all that I agree with. I hope he didn't give her any pills??? Tell her to go to another doctor and do it the right way.

I thought I was doing the right thing by going on the Richard Simmons diet without consulting with a doctor. I was amazed that I lost 30 pounds in 45 days. I felt great the entire time and wasn't hungry or anything. I followed his exercise program as well. I had to go to the doctor at the end of the 45 days and she actually got onto me and said I was starving myself. She said it was unhealthy for me to be eating such few calories. The calorie intake was based on the amount of weight you wanted to lose. The doctor told me the least amount of calories a woman should eat is 1200 per day. Each person is different and should intake calories depending on the amount of calories they do burn during the day. I would call around to the local gyms and nutritional counselors in your area to find out if what this doctor told your cousin could be doing more harm to her. What is your cousins body type now? Weight, Height, and build? How much did she exercise before? This does sound dangerous to me.

if your cousin statrs to eat normally again her body will "prepare for the next famine" and start storing fat. It doesn't know she is trying to lose weight and will most likely go into survival mode

I wonder why he put her on such a low calorie diet.. How would your cousin have the energy to work out and lose the 300 calories per day with just an 800 calorie diet. Is it possible the heard him wrong? Did he provide her a written report with this info on paper so that you can actually see it? Soemthing does not sound right. I think a Doc would know better that to put someone on an 800 calorie diet.. but in these days of malpractice who knows?

Wow, only 800 calories a day sounds a bit extreme to me. That can't possibly be a very heathly diet. What does she eat?

In my country there are not too many obese people so I actually have not heard of that kind of diet. I think it's just one of those 'yoyo' diets - the ones that make you lose and put on weight back and forth. One of the most effective diets I have heard of is the 'Nothing after six' diet. One can eat regularly during day time but should not eat anything after 6 pm. Maybe you can recommend this to your friend.

How can anybody be comfortable with just consuming 800 calories a day. I guess your minimum body function requires more than that.

I don't know why a doctor would put her on a 800 calorie diet. I've heard the lowest one should go is 1200. This weight loss diet does seem overly extreme and a little unhealthy. I've never been on a diet like that in my life, and I think it's better to learn good eatting habits rather then a quick fix. You know what I mean?

Wow, that seems extreme.. I don't think I could stick to that kind of diet.. It would seem like as soon as she starts eating alittle bit more she would just put the weight on quickly.. I wish her luck.. Maybe she should get a second oppinion.
