Methinks it's got to be toth - if you are happy, it's easier to help others. You help others, that pleases your ego, so you are happy.

I see it in a different angle. An enlightened achieves both together. If helping others is what gives you happiness where is the question of those two being different? In fact helping others is the ultimate in life and that alone is happiness. Even the doctrine 'Charity begins at home' pin points this. One live for others though the range of the term "others" may vary depending on the growth and state of the mind. For Jesus and Paramahamsa it may be the whole Universe, for majority it may be a family. But there are only few who live for themselves.

Thanks for your response! There are many aspects to helping others, and each has its own perspective. Read Ayn Rand's books (if you haven't already) and then maybe you will have one of those perspectives. One angle: Does only giving constitute charity? For example you know that an alocholic if given money will use it only to imbibe and harm himself, not giving him money then would be charity. I have read the Bhagwat Gita as well as the Old and New Testaments and the Koran too among the major religions of the world, there are many aspects to helping others.

We can not often tell the reality of whether something that happens is good or bad but with time we only get the knowledge that we tried to help and feeling good about that isnt bad

The term charity I used in not in the connotation of alms only.Charity is a wider concept, imbibing in it the whole gamut of service to the human kind. We need not be obsessed by any term as long as we understand and practice the concept. As for me I am a free religion man with due respect to all masters of the world. In my humble opinion they all speak of the same objective but in different languages.

I think first you have to love yourself before you can help others. If you love yourself then the love for others will follow automatically. That's why we have to love our children and let their selfesteem grow.

I do agree with you on that. I would go with both because when you are happy, you're more than likely to help others.
