There are some really effective free downloads around - which ones have you used and can recommend?

Spybot-search and destroy is good. CC cleaner (stands for crap cleaner) is a very good freeware program. I use it after every IT session and I´ve really noticed a difference. Less problems with PC altogether.

Thanks for best answer. Concerning CC cleaner, uncheck "Autocomplete Form History" (Windows) and it won´t clear your passwords anymore. Once you´ve done that you can use it after each IT session.

I use them too and also zonealarm stops quite a few and will only let in what you decide to let in. AVG is free at the moment but will change from being free in February.

I also use CC, and would use it more often, but it clears all my cookies and I have to re-enter all my passwords. First time I used it, I cleared more that a GB from the hard-drive!! I use AVG anti-virus, and I think you'll find that you can download the new free version if you visit their website. (they have NOT made it VERY easy to find....)Also worth getting their anti-spyware (previously called Ewido)

I have downloaded Avast antivirus software which is a free version for home users and have found it really useful in terms of catching up viruses at frequent intervals and finding viruses as soon as it comes from the net. I also a free software called RegCleaner which cleans up your registry from unwanted files and already installed and uninstalled softwares and cleans it thoroughly.

I´m also using Avast antivirus and I´m really pleased with it. I had Norton before but Avast is much better in my opinion, even though it´s free. Can only recommend it.

I've been using AVG Anti-virus (www.grisoft.com) for several years already. This is a very good anti-virus program because it has a huge and updated virus database and it is non-invasive like commercial anti-virus program that hugs up the computer's resources. I also like using VLC Media Player(www.videolan.org) It plays almost any media format out there. This one is really handy. FreeCiv (www.freeciv.org)is a turn-based strategy game where you build your own civilization from scartch and conquer other civilizations politcally, commercially or scientifically. There are a lot of cool free stuff in the Internet. Just always be careful of downloading stuff online. I have already experienced being infected by a trojan and it was exasperating.
