I have heard a lot of stories about what Veterinarian hospitals for animals do to your pets, I have had friends that have lost pets either in an operation, or that they have escaped, never to be seen again, I never believed these stories until I took my cat to have its' claws removed. In November we took out cat to have its' claws taken out as he was destroying the house, we have had this done to our first cat with no problems what so ever, but this time our second cat died on the operating table. When they called us to tell us the news all I could do was just sit there in disbelief, as we had this done before and never had a problem with it...it seems that according to the veterinarian that the cat died as it was waking up, and she told us that the cat may have been sick....what crappy lie that was, I was so angry I was going to go over to the animal hospital and take my revenge, but my wife managed to talk me out of it. Now this story gets better, first off, we got the cat at the animal shelter, where it had its papers that it was neutered, had all its needles and was in perfect health, so the story about it being unhealthy was a lie. Second, days and weeks after the incident I found out that this wasn't the first time that this hospital had lost a cat in the same fashion, so I am now looking into it with more detail, and possibly going to file a lawsuit and have this place shut down...and third, which is the best one yet, was this animal hospital had the balls to call me and say we are not going to charge you for the operation, but we are going to do an autopsy to see what happened and that it will cost $75.00 to complete, I told them that if they laid another knife to that cat I would personally drive the sharp end of it up there behind..imagine, they screwed up and killed my cat, they couldn't charge me for the screw up, so they figured that I should pay for them to butcher the poor thing further....what has the world come to, when anyone can get a licence to slaughter animals, and have the nerve to charge people for it. The picture here is of the little guy I lost he is the one on the left, the one on his back is the other cat I own, he is a pure addition to our family, as was the other until I lost him....I cry every time I see this picture and think....what have I done.....

This is going to sound insensitive, but next time DON'T DECLAW YOUR CAT! What a barbaric practice! :( Any vet that agrees to declaw a cat can't be a good vet in the first place.

My dog die in animal hospital 8 years ago and I still cry any time I see her picture. I cry because I believe that it was my fault. They told me that my dog has to stay overnight in animal hospital, she die during the night, because...no one was there. I have 2 dogs and one cat now and I will never leave my animal in hospital overnight. I am hoping that they won't need any help other than shots.

I feel the same way, never again will I take an animal to a animal hospital unless it is really sick, and I will definitely be checking there references before hand.

I have been so lucky with the vets in my city. When my two babies had their illnesses, the vets really came through for me. I am so sorry to those who have not had good experiences with the vet. No one should have to go through that kind of pain.

I am so, so sorry to hear about what happened to you. I too am a cat owner and have had cats most of my adult life. I have been very fortunate (so far) not to have had such an incident. This won't bring you any comfort about the loss of your pet, but have you considered filing some sort of complaint about this particular vet? Maybe it will save other kitty lives in the future.

I feel sorry about your cat too.Maybe the vet made a mistake and just wouldn't admit it.I'm a vet student and cases like yours really scares me. Like what our vet instructor says you'll never learn if you won't be able to commit a mistake. Scared the hell out of me just thinking about it.

I am so sorry. They are cute. I would probably be doing the same thing if I was in your shoes. They definately did something wrong and are liable. The problem is proving it. My husband would have never stopped me from confronting them. I do it all the time with doctors for us humans. I still say that none of these doctors whether it's human or animal have any brains.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your cat. What a horrible thing to have to go through. I have never lost a beloved pet in that fashion before, and our own vet is really good. I hope that you follow through and have this clinic investigated, maybe let the shelter know what happened as well as they might have resources to help with this. Best wishes....

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. If you want to have this vet investigated you should go to the bureau that licensed him. Here in the US if you complain to the licensing board they will do an investigation and if they find him to be negligent they could take away his license. As for a lawsuit, I'm not sure about your laws but here in New York you can only sue for vet bills and the cost of the animal. According to the law the pets are considered property and eventhough they are part of our family and love them more than anything, they won't consider that. So, it would be more on principle than anything else. I wish you all the best and know it is hard on you. If you want to find another vet in case your cat does need treatment, ask around, ask your friends or anyone else you know of a good recommendation, that's how I found mine and I've had no complaints with him. There are good and caring vets who truly care about animals and are not just in it for the money.
