Do you have a link to the research or the article? I have never heard this. I have always heard that we need a minimum of 6 hours of sleep/night, but that 7 or 8 hours is better. I have never read that anything less than 6 hours is healthy or that the body and mind can function appropriately with that little amount of sleep. I know that I would feel pretty lousy if I only got 4 hours of sleep.

I think different people can function on different hours of sleep. When I was in the Army my body adjusted to having almost no sleep. I don't think it was healthy & I think it contributed to me getting really sick. My husband is fine on less sleep than I am.

I think the quality and quantity of the sleep are both important. It's true that we are able to get enough sleep in 4 hour times, provided that we are having quality sleep. Sleep can be in several level, like, shallow sleep, deep sleep, deeper sleep & etc. I am not so sure on this, but i know the deepest level of sleep will help us rest the most and relax our tension efficiently. Some people may sleep long hours a day, but still feel tired bcoz they didn't sleep sound. A good way to maintain quality sleep is go to bed on time, so that your bio clock is not messed up and you can sleep soundly at the fixed time. Besides, food is important too, avoid drinking coffee so that you it won't keep awake. Besides, exercise more will help too. Do something relax before sleep like reading not-so-exciting books and reading newspaper, listening to not-so-hot music will relax our mind and prepare our brain into proper sleep. And, i know Thomas Edison used to sleep 4 hours a day and he is long life and invented tons of inventions :)

I don't think that I'd be functional on 4 hours of sleep for more than 1 night. I tried cutting my sleep down to 6 hours, but it never lasts more than a week. Right now I'm getting about 6 hours of sleep because I have to take my girlfriend to work early every morning. Most days, I'm ready to pass back out as soon as I get back home and end up taking another hour nap.

well, 8 hours is ideal for children but 6 hours will suffice for adults. that's according to my research way back. oversleeping is unhealthy for the heart too so it has to be just the right amount of sleep hours.

I dont agree with that. Studies for years have showed that 8 hours is the healthiest and best rest you need, to function properly. Researchers are always finding new findings, but I will stick to the originally theory of 8 hours a night. Personally I cant function without sleeping 8 hours. Good topic.

Wow, I don't think I could manage on four hours of sleep for to long. I could probably do it for a day or so, but after that I would collapse from complete exhaustion. I too need about six hours but would prefer to get eight.
