Honesty, integrity, kindness, resiliency, devotion? So many good things to emulate. What defines your character?

Integrity is being able to hold true to one's values. Sounds a lot like honesty to me. Be honest with others but try to not to hurt them. It is hard to do as you might not want to say your butt looks big in those clothes. To thine ownself be true. To me that means to be conscious enough to admit to yourself that you are not always the best or that you might not be the type of person you would like to be. Kindness is to try not to hurt others feelings and to treat them as you would like to be treated, Sounds like the Golden Rule to me. Do they still teach that in school? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Not to be mistaken for "do unto before they have a chance to do unto you". Devote yourself yourself to helping others. What goes around, comes around. Also like the Golden Rule. Do you see the connections? Resiliency is being like a tree. Being strong enough to bend. Whichever way the prevailing wind blows bend with it or you will break. You don't have to like it to live. Just live for the time when you can change it. If it can be changed, just do it.

Nana, I really like and appreicate the way that you express your thoughts - such sincerity and truth in them! I live for helping other people! I have been teaching all my life and even when I was a little boy, I liked to help our neigbors by shoveling their sidewalks, even though I wasn't asked to do so. Random acts of kindness are a gift to the world. "Pay it forward" as they say, and your life will be rewarded and will be fruitful. Thank you again, Nana for contributing such inspirational thoughts to this discussion. May we all have the grace and humility to practice what we preach!

Well, if I can't trust someone, there's nothing else left. Most things I can work around, but if I can't trust someone, forget about it! I mean, there are plenty of other character traits that are important, but that's the most important to me.

Very good point, dmillman! That's true! I have been through that and once that bridge was burned there really was no going back because I really didn't want to have anything more to do with that person. It was over! Trust would definitely be in the top 3! Thank you for your insightful comment!

I think I'm an honest, kind, devoted individual who has sustained a huge amount of resilience in my life. I value my family and friends and therefore, could never conceive the idea of hurting someone close to me. I'm generally shy when you first meet me in person, but once I get to talking with you, I warm up a little more and open up more, but I feel I'm a polite, honest person.

I think kindness is the most important characteristic. So many difficult situations would be smoothed over if people were just kind and considerate to each other.

Let me ask you a question back please, which of the charater trait can you do without? They are all equally important. One is not complete without one of them. Can someone that is unkind be honest? kindness itself is an ofshoot of honesty and integerity.

You are absolutely correct in that many positive character traits are all intertwined, so my first response is to say integrity because, to me, that envelopes all good traits, does it not? Someone who has integrity would most likely be an honest and kind individual, that person would also have sound morals and ethics. As for your question about someone being unkind and still be honest, I would say sure. I've met plenty of people who are so brutally honest that they don't care if they hurt your feelings or not. Sometimes the truth hurts afterall. So some character traits do not necessarily go hand in hand nor are they necessarily dependent upon one another. Insteresting discussion. Thanks for making me think about it myself and thank you for your contribution!
