I guess it depends on your interpretation of what is a swear word. Certainly in the UK, "damn" and "hell" are not considered swear words at all. There are only really two words we would consider really bad swear words, and a couple of others that would not be encouraged from kids - but I certainly don't see a problem with the words you have mentioned.

i agree, there are far worse words out there that some kids say and most of them aren't from cartoons but other places, more of the people around them. an adult who is around them is a greater influence then a tv will ever be. and if their tv is the greater influance on a child, then there is something wrong with the parenting.

I'd have to agree that Damn and Hell aren't cuss words... If your kids hear it from your preacher, you can't really point fingers at a cartoon. I do understand that context makes a difference, but there are plenty of other words you can say in a negative context that many wouldn't say is a cuss word...

You have reason to be angry!! My son loved Thomas the Tank Engine from the age of 12 months. In one of the episodes that he watched from a new tape id bought that day, were the words 'shut up'. I never thought anything of it until he had watched the tape a few times and then was telling me to shut up. I contacted the company in Britian (im in australia), and the promised to look into it even though the lady said she doubted that would be in the episode. Sure enough, 48 hours later they contacted me via phone and apologised. I recieved a large parcel about 4 weeks later with an apology letter and 6 Thomas the Tank Engine video tapes. That particular episode was also re written. Im so glad that I made them aware of the problem. Another thing that annoys me in all the latest animated movies and cartoons, is the farting. Why do they have to put that in??

That's good to know that at least the Thomas people care what our children are hearing. My son likes Thomas anyway, but I think i will probably get him some more Thomas DVD's now that I realize that they are such a positive company. Thank you for the information.

oh yeah i totally agree with you!!!my 4 year old niece watches disney a lot, and i too notice it. i don't really mind the words like "damn" and "hell" depends probably how one uses it. i think what i don't like the most is when they say somethin like "you stupid" or "what an idiot" which i hear a lot from their shows mostly in lilo and stitch. at first when my niece copies it, thought it was funny but she's saying these words often now, not good to hear from a 4 year old. i don't even like it when she says "whatever" whenver she's told to do something.what's goin on with these cartoons????

Unfortunately I guess, we older people far more understand the word "respect" and "discipline". The new generation nowadays, doesn't care anymore about malicious word that's been spreading around everywhere. I think as a concerned citizen we must make an appeal to the concerned authorities in the movie industry, or in appropriate government agencies to do something about this problem. Or else, we will be totally outwashed by those bad-mouthing, and the next generation will just be as worse as the generation of today. We have to do something!

I've noticed that too that is why I monitor the programs my toddler is watching. I am also buying VHS and DVD's on old programs like KidsSong, Bible Songs and Wee Sing. She learns a lot from this and no swearing at all.

Foul language has developed quite a foothold in our society in the last 10 or 15 years. Many words that used to be taboo are freely bantered about. Even in church, it's not uncommon to hear any but the most vile uttered in the foyer. This is not just about protecting children. It's a reflection of the loss of moral values in the general population. Many today say that words are just words. I contend that what's in your heart flows through your lips. It's a picture of the lowering of the societal standards. You might argue that things change. However, if a rising tide raises all ships, a declining tide will only do the reverse. Declining mores in language use reflects declines in respect for others, loss of compassion for those who are facing difficult circumstances, and a general apathy about anything that doesn't directly touch me.

I hate this. I think that cartoons are trying to make more money by appealing to adults ... hoping that the parents will overlook the swearing. Besides swearing there are other inappropriate things that cartoons are showing, perhaps you remember Pinochio's thong in Shrek 2? I think that we as parents need to do a better job and shut these programs off so that the message is sent that it's not ok to feed toddlers and young children inappropriate materials.

I get that they want to appeal to everyone..but to put that crap in the movie..yes most kids wont get it..but its shouldnt be there in the first place..there childrens movies for cryin out loud..they dont need to put bad words and stuff like the thong in...i dunno..i dontthink i would feel this way if i had a teen..but my 4 year old repeats and dioes everything he sees..and it bothers me..

Most cartoons are for people who are older than 4. Ther are still things a little one can wathc like Sesame street and such. Part of what you are seeing with the changes in language are geared toward those who have money to spend and there are very few people under 15 who spend money on their own. These companies are also competing with cable where you can hear stronger language. Some words that are considered cursing are not. "Hell" is a location or state of mind and I have yet to hear "damn" in a children's cartoon.

I agree this is definitely a bad trend. kids tend to pick up these words by watching these cartoons. this tends to rob them of their childhood innocence. i feel there should be some regulatory authority that has to certify these cartoons. the ones with swear words r not suitable for young impressionable minds. i feel all like minded people should come together to raise our views on this point.

There is a solution, but you have to be willing to do something about it and all it sometimes takes is an e-mail or a phone call. My sister was watching Family channel with her children and heard a commercial where a child used God's name in vain. She contacted the channel via e-mail and within a day they got back to her and removed the commercial. Maybe more of us should follow her example and speak up. If they are going to lose viewers and therefore revenue they'll quickly change their minds about what is acceptable for our children's ears.

unless i hear SH*T, F*CK, C**T, B*TCH and things along those lines, i'm not bothered. i personally don't think HELL and DAMN would be considered a swear word. and what PBS show are you watching that says that. most of the ones i let my children watch are okay. and you just have to teach them what words are okay to say and the proper way to use some of them. my son is 4, the only time he said the "F" word is when my husband said it once. and my son only said it ONCE, i told him not to say it and its not nice to say and he never did it again...problem sloved. you have to teach children that just because someone else does it, it doesn't mean its always correct. teach them to think for themselves and don't blame other media forms. you don't want them to watch it...don't let them. my kids watch cartoon network, nick jr, and disney channel all day and they haven't learned anything i would consider "bad" from there. the works i think is my son learned the word "DORK" from Ed, Edd, & Eddy, but i told him it wasn't nice and everytime he hears the word he says, "mommy, thats not nice to call people dork, you can't say dork" and i'm very proud of him when he tells me that. i have no problem with todays cartoons...hey, the ones we used to watch..like looney toons...c'mon, that didn't have much words but the content wasn't any better.

I know!!!!! I walked by the tv the other day and heard one boy call another boy a bad name. I asked my kids if I had heard it wrong, and they said no, and I said "change that channel"!!! I think it's rediculous that these stations would allow this. Especially when the kids cussing are only 7,8,9,....I'm thinking about cancelling cable all together...

I am the same with you. I don't like how the cartoons these days are teaching kids such words. What ever happened to stuff like Sesame Street? So what I do is buy a whole bunch of dvds for kids that don't have these things that I don't want them to learn. I also don't use that type of language at home or out.

Warning, do not watch Anime if you dislike swearing on cartoon film, why? Anime mostly considered like normal film, there's rating for Everyone, Teen, Mature, and even adult. Most TV station outside Japan who broadcast Anime tend to think if Anime just like regular cartoon. Trust me, be very selective when letting your children watching Anime, because rating in Japan and outside Japan can be very different.

I don't plan on having DS-1 watch cartoons like that. He watches Sesame Street and is fine with that. I think the cursing is another part of what is contributing to problems with kids. I know my kids will be exposed to it, but I want it done on my terms, not by what they see on TV.

the media is really influential. if you don't want your kids to be influenced by media, try limiting their access to such bad mouthed shows? control is one of the ways to prevent having your kid influenced. i'm a kid also so i know about it.
