Singing to Children

I loved to sing to my children. One of my favorite songs that I sang to them often was "You are my Sunshine". Singing or humming to a baby or child has a soothing effect on them. I would sing or hum to them while rocking them to sleep, nursing them, or when we were just having quiet time. We would spend much time listening to children's music and singing along with the music. Many times we would watch Sesame Street or Mister Rogers and sing-along with the tunes.

That is funny that was the first song I can remember singing to my belly when I was pregnant. We sing all time together. My father was a singer, not famous, meaning he sung all the time or whistled a tune. So it's natural for me as well. I will walk through the house and belt out a tune while cleaning. My girls join right in, they know Nat King Cole songs as well as Areatha Franklin! Music is a wonderful thing!!!

I don't remember my parents ever singing to me all that much when I was young, but I must have loved it if they did. I've had a great love of music from as far back as I can remember. I wish that I could remember if my mother did sing to me. I know that I used to be fascinated when she would play a couple of tunes on the piano that she learned when she was younger. But our piano is now out of tune and really old and we really don't use it for anything. I wish that I'd learned to play it more than just pecking at the keys. *laugh*

i know pregnant moms who sing songs to their babies even if the baby is still inside the womb. they say it's creating better bonding between the baby and the mom.

yes. that's one thing. it gives the child the desire to learn songs as well. subconsciously, without noticing, it helps in the emotional development of the child.

when i was still a baby and younger, my mom always hum me songs. she's not a good singer but there's something i feel about her voice. maybe it's about the emotional touch of a mom to her child. it's the bond between them that makes mom's voice so wonderful for a kid.

What a great discussion. It has brought back many happy memories. I used to sing 'Go to sleep my baby' everynight as I cradled my daughter and son. I also used to put on music to rock them to sleep. They loved Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison very loudly to block out other noises. My daughter and I used to dance along and sing to her favourite songs 'Shiny Happy People' and 'The Shoop Shoop Song'. When I hear them now I always remember those days. Sadly now I have to be inflicted with drum and bass and loud R&B. I played them some Joni and Van a while back and they screamed at me to turn it off!! LOL

Any child's song will be great. Sesame Street is very good since kids have opportunity to learn something useful in each episode.

My daughters love music. When i was pregnant with my first, i put headphones on my belly and she'd kick like crazy. i didnt do it much with my 2nd one, i was so busy with my 2yr old that i didnt have time to sit down much like i did before. i feel guilty about it, but she seems to like music too. i sing to my girls all the time, and even though i cant carry a tune, they seem to enjoy it anyways! my 2yr old sings right along with me or with her shows on tv (dora, sesame street, etc). music is therapy for me and i hope it becomes an important part of their lives as well.

I love to sing so I really enjoy singing to my kids when they were babies, even to this day... we sing and have a videoke machine... I think it makes kids smart if they are exposed to music early. All my kids can sing in tune too so it's really cute. I think kids who love to sing and dance are happy kids.

When Lakota was a baby, I used to sing this one short tune over and over when she was fussy or wouldn't sleep. Now she will routinely ask me to sing that song to her, or sing it to me. It apparently is a precious memory to her, my singing that little song, and the funny part is that it started because when I get worried or stressed I hum something calming to myself and I discovered the baby liked it!

That is great. I used to sing to my son when he was small too. Of course now he hates me to try and sing...lol. I think it is all part of thier learning process and like you said it can be soothing too. It teaches them harmony and words and how to sing...what could be wrong with that?

I don't remember my mom singing to me, and I can't sing at all so I know I didn't sing to my kids... I did play music alot around the house though. I would listen to all kinds of music so they could appreciate it. My sister used to sing "You are my sunshine" to my nephew, he still loves the song (he's 24).

Thanks Elusive for the trip down memory lane! I love music and wanted to encourge a love for music with my children. I too, sang 'You are my Sunshine' to my children. I bought them all types of children's tapes with songs from Mister Rogers and Sesame Street (in addition to watching the shows). I miss those days.

My mom always sang to me when I was a kid and nothing sticks so firmly in my mind. It's a good memory that your children will have with you for the rest of their lives. I think that'a great thing to do.
