we all know u is a vowel. but y dont we use AN before it?

hey guys, i have a doubt in english............. we all know the vowels a,e,i,o,u............ we use AN instead of A before a,e,i,o....... but wen it comes to u y do we use A rather then using AN .......... plz clarify my doubt!!!!!!!!!!11

I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. Proper grammar calls for the use of "an" before a word beginning with the letter "u". For example: Grammar is an unpopular subject in school.

ok thanks.......... but i have see many english books using A insted of AN...... dont we say its A union and not AN union?

for eg. we generally say "A UNION WAS FORMED" and not "AN UNION WAS FORMED".....
