Turning myLot into "a job".

Australia
January 29, 2007 3:50pm CST
It's no wonder so many people have large numbers of posts. They don't do much. I'm up around 582, and I'd have written several thousand words. I'm fussy about what discussions I pick. Ever notice in any job there are people who just go through the motions? Quality is debatable, content is iffy, and the product forgettable. Can that many people have so little to say? ****Note: another post is on Writing about http://www.lulu.com. This post was made specifically so people could see the finished product. I said I'd report back, so I've reported.****

Hi! I am also wondering about the same thing. I think it depends on the intention of the person in joining myLot. Some join primarily for financial reasons. Others would primarily join to find out about other people or to gain friends (and earn on the side). I joined myLot because I am presently on vacation, and I have nobody else to talk to. I think it's a good outlet or a venting room. Thus, I really give lengthy responses and advice every now and then. I can understand other people who cannot express themselves well in English so they give very short responses. Others just try to make lines. I hope everybody would just try to have fun and learn from others. We are on the same boat on this I'm sure.

I promise you, nobody's going to complain about some venting, and fun is pretty popular.

Yes, I absolutely agree with you. I joined Mylot because I need to improve my English skill. I am from China and I still feel it is difficult to communicate with others normally in English although I have learned English for ten years. I think I can learn more from Mylot and gain some friends.

I have to agree with you. Yes I signed up because they said there was money to be made but after a few short hours of reading the discussions soon found out that the money is small, however that hasn't deterred me from the site. I enjoy giving my opinion and starting topics of interest to me and asking more questions about the way that mylot works. I think that if you joined for the money you will be disappointed, I think that if you joined to have fun then you will and you may make a few bucks on the side. Have fun and good luck!

I've noticed that most people really don't have much to say. Too many people do put too much emphasis on the money here at Mylot. And I think that's the quickest way to do poorly - in both quality and earnings. I think you've made a very good analogy here, and there are certainly people who come here and expect Mylot to be a full time income. I sort of feel badly for them.

Yeah, particularly the ones where you know that few cents really matters. I had a friend who posted "I need money!" and I was too embarrassed for him to reply.

Oh, ouch. I don't blame you for not replying. :/

I enjoy everything in mylot. Its not a waste of time but to other people who replied with ok, i don't know... huh?! why did they still do when they don't know about the topic. agree?

Yes, so many people can have so little to say. I only used mylot initially as a diversion while at work. I was locked in a lab all by myself while hundreds of tubes were spinning for hours. That left lots of time for idle play. Forutnately, my mind has lots of trivial and interesting information packed into it so I do not spend time on mylot as a job or second source of income. It just gives me something to look at when the rest of the world bores me or there are no people to watch out my window.

Matter of fact, we've got a few scientists. I've been having an occasional discussion with someone about antigravity. In context, broadening the scope of discussions is a good thing. If your info feels like a good topic, try posting it.
30 Jan 07
What was in the tubes?! I'm interested to hear what sort of laboratory you work in. Also, are you really not interested in the money? I think that if the money held no interest for me whatsoever, I would just use a general discussion or blogging site. It's the money that keeps me here!

Ive also noticed a dramatic amount of people that will respond minimally to absolutely anything. I was extremely fussy with what I responded to, but after a short break I feel a lot more options have opened up to me. My pet peeve here is when others respond to a discussion merely to state that tehy know nothign about what you are talking about, or cant answer you. I'm like, well why bother responding? Augh! All for a cent or two! Pft... JMO

I think alot of people only read the headers and then respond. Its really frustrating.

I agree. The first thing out of my mouth is, "Then why the heck are you responding to this post if you know nothing about it?" It's is frustrating when you are reading through 50-100 posts on one discussion and have to keep coming across these lame answers.

Thank you. Then it's not just me. I've been wondering if people even read headers.

Lol! Just like you, I am reasonably selective about what I respond to and am quite diligent about what I post. Overall, I do have fun with what I do. But then it takes all kinds to make the world and mylot is no exception. While everyone wants to make a packet off some other person's project it is still possible to give value in exchange for value. Your report is indeed fascinating.

Here I am, posted about 44 posts in my last 48 hours as a member here. Frankly speaking, I value both the earnings and quality of information. I would never post for the sake of posting. I hate one liners which just agree and an answer without stating any views or opinions at all. As a quiet guy, i hardly express my opinions in terms of speaking or sharing with my friends. I found it hard to communicate deep topics which many of us are, unwilling to talk about in our daily face-to-face conversations. Hence, MyLot, provided me the plattform of not only sharing my deepest of opinion out loud in words, it also allowed me to have a share of privacy. I am glad that the information here are valued by the members. For those posting like few sentences without views or opinions, i feel that its like wasting the spaces of this awesome and fantastic forum. Sorry for being too judgemental. Serious, please dont type for the sake of typing. Share your views, let the world know your pespective. yea?

I try not to comment unless I can contribute or learn something or am interested in the topic. I hear some people say they try to do 100 responses a day--surely they can't all be quality comments? I can't understand why people jump into conversations like 'do you think [so-and-so] will have a good year in F1 racing?' and post reponses that say 'gee, I don't follow that sport'? Grrrrr...

I can do 5000 words a day. I tried to do 50 myLot posts a day, and it just didn't work. Between looking for topics and coming up with decent language, it uses up too much time.

When I first started on Mylot I was really hooked and was making a lot of posts, 50 to 100. Of course, that and reading discussions took up about 8 hours a day!

Who turned your crank the wrong way? I am fussy, too, except I dont care how many posts the next person has. Its none of my business nor yours as long as you keep to the quality you want to give out. Chill!

Actually, Bee, the quality thing's been done enough, I think you would agree. I'm trying to get at the point that I've seen people work like this, too, "going through the motions", rather than providing a productive result.

I really don't think it's the fact that people have little to say, I think it becomes more of a way to earn more cash..it's just like working. You do what you have to do to make your quota or earn your amount for the day.

I understand what you're coming from. I'm one of those people who are here to earn money as a full time job :-) In the beginning it was hard to think of posts and seeing that your posts were already posted in the past. And after being here a week, I have a better idea now of how to enjoy the site. I like it better posting to topics that interest me. If it's something I don't know about then I don't write anything but if it's something I have knowledge of, I write as much as I can. I do feel bad when I see posts that are too short, that are just here to be counted as one post.

Enjoyment's so important. There's a lot of things to navigate your way through. Nobody who know it seems to use the site the same way. Some of the regulars are features in themselves. I seem to stick to particular interests, and I keep seeing topics I've never posted in or even replied in.

Honestly, I think people in general are lacking in things to say. Think about most of the conversations in everyday life. How much of it had actual substance?

Yes, and more's the pity. How many people's lives would be more interesting with the substance? Maybe people just aren't used to meaningful conversations.

Many people aren't used to *thinking.* Why should we when we have all kinds of media and mindless "entertainment" to think for us?

I agree that most people here seem to be just about posting for the money. I certainly find myself doing that, but I also try to enjoy what I read and post, and learn some new things as I browse. As far as just chatting with my friends, I have another site that I do that on. I wish they paid me! LOL! I can't imagine trying to make this a "job." If I break it down, I make around $.40/hour. I could pick up pennies on the street and make more than that.

I've just discovered MyLot a few days ago and am totally loving it! In my previous life, I was a Regional Administrator in a large automobile company. I'm always talking to people to get things done. But there's one thing I never mastered, which is the art of small talk. And MyLot gives me the opportunity to "walk the room" and join discussions about a variety of things I can related to. It's good training ground.

You'll also find some real scope. There are quite a few people who do post really interesting topics and know how to hold a discussion.

I think it's funny to read some of the comments made. When I look at a discussion I often think about what I want to say, start typing, think it's dumb or worthless and erase it, then move to another topic. Sometimes I wish I could just throw out the words without thinking, but I just can't. I think it's nice to see other people who are "fussy" about the discussions they choose to partake. (Now I think I'll go read some more of the discussions you've posted.)

I too try to pick the quilty discusions. Some days i find it harder then others and I'm terriable at starting them. A lot of the people on here are gone that use to just say yes, no, I don't know for a responce. So, mylot has gotten alot better there.

I want to make posting became my job, but I find it is diffcult, because I dont have a ot of things to speak and told the others. POsting is a tired work, and make people lonely. I think that posting in some forum to get paid in spare time is good enough. people can make sme extra money for spare time. I like post here, but I cannot post al days around

Some people who earn a lot in this website is turning it into a job, I earn less than a dollar so I it is just a hobby posting here. I prefer to post here rather than chatting nonsense in chatrooms, atleast here I always learn something new and I get to interact with serious people. Be disciplined in terms of proper usage of grammar, punctuation marks etc.

It's not too hard to make this into an obsession. I mean, yahoo answers has some people on there who've made thousands of posts, and they're not getting paid for anything, here when you're getting paid for it, it's not that hard to get up there in the number of posts that you have, or discussions that you've replied too. This is just going to get bigger and bigger.

If you do not sincerely like the discussion or it does not in any way affect you, it follows that you wouldn't have anything vital to share. Your responses will not have any impact on the reader and is even forgettable! So I'd say one should only comment or start a discussion on a topic which he is enthusiastically interested in. Somehow that works!

Well I found mylot through a money making site, but I really don't care about that. I think it is more interesting to talk to people with the same intrests as me. The money really can't be good enough to make it into a job can it? I really don't reply to stuff that I don't find interesting on any site.
