Why do people have dogs when they leave them tied outside all the time?

I don't understand why people bother having dogs when they leave them outside tied up. Why do they even have them?

I find it a disgusting behavior for any dog owner to do this to there dog as well. What's worse is when they will leave there dog out in the cold for a long period of time. I think the reason I dislike seeing this so much is because.. When I had a dog as a kid my mom used to always make me leave my dog outside because my Step Dad had a problem with her being in the house due to the way the dog shed. I used to cry late at night knowing that my dog was out there in the cold. And it actually ended up getting locked jaw & my parents said my dog had to go for a visit to the vet.. And instead they took my dog to the vet & put him down.. Without even telling me. I still haven't been able to forgive them for doing these things.. I communicated with them on how I hadn't liked my dog being out there in the cold & they didn't take my feelings in to account.. I still hold on to that as an adult.. Now that I have my own dog I don't dare allow her to sleep outside.. I as well don't dare tie her outside either.. I promised myself after that experience as a kid that.. I would never allow anyone to do that who was apart of my life ever again.. I am very devoted to my dog & I would never do that to any animal I own.. To me people like this who do this.. Don't deserve to have a dog if all they are going to do is tie there pet up.. And just leave them there. To me this is almost like animal cruelty in my eyes. There's a house down the road in our neighborhood where some person will actually chain there dog in the front.. And just leave it there all day long.. Even if it's freezing cold outside.. There's been times where I just wanted to run up & unchain the dog & take it home for me & my other half.. Because I know me & my other half would take a lot better care of this poor neglected dog.. To me these type of dog owners who do this are uneducated. I honestly believe that these type of people need to learn to understand that.. Owning a pet is a big responsibility & just chaining them outside & leaving them there without any supervision.. Can leave them feel neglected but also helpless. It's just plain sad to see this being done quite often these days. I think people like this should have there animals taken away so that these animals will at least be owned by better dog owners who will actually.. Take care of them & not do things such as this to them.. In conclusion.. I honestly do feel this being done to any type of animal is so very wrong.. And like you I don't think I will ever begin to understand why people just leave there dogs outside like this.. I think it is pure idiocy & something more needs to be done about this in my opinion.. Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

I don`t get it either. it is so cruel to leave them tied up. we have 3 dogs and they are in the house all the time except when they have to go out to use the bathroom.

LOL, that's funny, we have 3 dogs also, and I would never leave them alone outside all day.

I have wondered about that myself. It's horrible in my opinion. I have seen dogs on a short leash out there day and night, day after day though all weather. It is inhumane. People just don't respect animals at all. They don't realize that they have feelings and emotions too, and need love.

Sometimes people tie them up so they can "watch" the house. Other times, they get them, then tie them up out back when they become too much trouble and cuteness has worn off. It makes me so sad when I see dogs tied up in backyards--usually as far away from the house as possible. Those poor dogs just want to be a part of their family. If the people would just spend the time to train them properly, maybe they could get to know just what a wonderful friend that dog could be.

I really don't get it either. I have 4 dogs and they are all inside. If it is too cold my little one won't even go outside because she could get frostbite. I don't see the point of having a dog if you do not have room for them in your life. In the least they should have a fenced backyard to run around in.

I don't understand this either. I have 3 that are treated just like the rest of the family. The only time they go out is if they want to.

I used to have a Rottweiler, his weight is about 120 lbs, a very playful dog, I leave him in his cage outside for security, also because I have 3 kids, ages 7,5 and 3, I don't want my kids to be crushed by my dog, sometimes you gotta make choices, it's how you act on it that counts. Caging or tying the dog outside doesn't mean the owner is cruel or something, everybody has his/her own reasons for doing such.
