Weird Neighbors

United States

Okay this is going to be a weird question, but I got to see if any of you have any answers on this. Our neighbors after Christmas put a woodstove out on their back patio...a wood stove on bricks which they burn. Why in the world would you do this? What is the point? They burn it and don't stay out there, and a woodstove isn't really meant to be stuck outside to the outside world. So do tell me your thoughts cause I am dying to hear them!

Hmm... my response can be split in two so pick the one that most applies to who your neighbors are. Young Couple: Chances are it was a present from someone or it has been lingering around the house and theres just not room inside anymore. Because they put it outside and still use it, im sure it has some type of sentimental value to them. Otherwise I would just throw it away. Maybe when you are out getting ready to go somehwere and you happen to see them you can do one of the nice "hey there neighbor, how are you doing? Have a good christmas, looking forward to valentines day? So umm... out of curiousity I saw your latest patio addition..." Maybe you can get some info. If they are an elderly couple: I assume it's a really old stove or a present and well... elderly people do things a bit differently and I would just let it go. Chances are it's sentinmental and they just don't want to throw anything away. Also it might make the home too hot and maybe they like to sit near the window and stare at it??

Its a young couple with two kids. They live in a newly built triplex. So really they couldn't put it inside if they wanted to. lol I am thinking the later might be the case (they want to look it at from inside), but they don't always leave the blind on the sliding glass door open when they burn it. lol

Thats reallly odd and it's a hazard to leave BURNING WOOD unoccupied. And it's even worst to have children and to leave it unoccupied.

I can think of two possibilities why any o ne would have a heating stove out side on the patio. One is to set and watch the fie in the fire box. The other is to get rid of trash that can be burned. You know the paper stuff and the boxes.any way that would be my guess.

I thought it would be dangerous to burn paper like that. The hot ashes fly out of it and then you are at risk of setting dry leaves on fire. I hope the exhaust has a screen. I just had a thought too...they have it set on bricks because the patio is made of wood. Ummm...wouldn't that be really dangerous to set a wood burning stove there? Even if it is on bricks, patios to apartments normally have wooden sides for privacy too. Are they afraid of catching that wood on fire? And if they leave it unattended...that is even more of a risk. You might want to mention it to the apartment manager. I would hate for your apartments to catch fire because they were stupid and set it too close to a wooden wall and didn't watch it.

Its a cement patio that it is...but I don't think it would just sit on the ground? I think its needs to be on those bricks. Its has a big pipe thing coming out of it...so I think it has the exhaust. lol I'll have to take a picture soon and share, cause its just very weird.

Is the woofstove vented into the house and actually heating the inside of the house? I have seen many people do this. They actually make a brand that is made to be outside and vented into the house. I think that may be what they did.

Nope its on the outer patio of the house.... Its a newer triplex - rented, so they couldn't put such a thing anyway...

Do they sit out there at all? I was thinking maybe they smoke and don't want to smoke in the house around the kids. For gosh sakes girl, go get a pair of binoculars so you can check things out better.lol. I was also thinking maybe they were burning garbage too. I don't think I have ever had weird neighbors, I'm usually that weird neighbor.lol

They do smoke. I know that. And they smoked outside in the summer out there. So whos knows...maybe they do go out there and I just don't see them. lol But the thing is...I do not see them out there. I'll see it burning here and there, but do not see them.

Well they must have heard that the cold air outside causes higher utility bills, so they did the math :-) Seriously I have not a clue, I am just as puzzled as you. Just ask them. Next time you see them out, comment on the stove how neat it is or how much you like it, then once the door to conversation is open, ask them why is it outside. Me I am too nosy not to have asked by now LOL.

I wonder if they have a gas stove, and they can't afford to pay for gas, and it was shut off. So when everyone isn't looking they go out there and cook, and run back inside. Or, Since They sell those fire pits everywhere now, target walmart, you name it they think it is supposed to be one of those. Strictly ornamental. Perhaps, they are doing something really stinky inside the house and want everyone to smell just the wood burning? That's all I can think of right now, I have to check back on this thread!

Maybe they are burning garbage (plastics, newspapers) . I know my dad had a woodstove outside and thats why he had it . He also burned left over food ( so no to attract bugs ) and any twigs etc in the yard . See plastics smell terrible if burned in the house so they probably put it outside for that reason . Thats the only reasons I can think of . Have a nice day

What a waste of time and wood! Sounds to me like they always wanted a wood stove and now that they have one, they want the world to see it. Why on Earth would you put it on your patio?

I would guess that they don't know what it is for, and they are using it as a decoration.

Who knows with people nowa days. We got strange neibours to. You never see them when its light out but come 12am the house starts to liven up and theres noise all night but yet you can sit outside to wait and see if you see anyone coming or going and you never do. My neibours have been here for 6 months now and I have seen them twice but hear them all night.

I do not know what it is like where you live in idaho, but down here in Texas many people love to barbeque. It is common to see smoke rising up in the air as people put meat on the grill in the backyard and enjoy a wonderful dinner.

Hmmm. Other than this being an outdoor furnace, that is a good question. Maybe they are testing it before putting it in the house. Maybe this is some new trend. Do you live in Califonia by chance? There are some wood/pellet burners that are like sheds that stay outside. They produce hot water that is piped into the home. This is converted into heat.

maybe they burn thier paper garbage in it, thats what we do and it saves a bundle on the garbage disposal fee.

I guess it depends on what they are using it for. Are they cooking on it or are they just burning stuff? My guess would be that they want to get rid of excess wood and whatnot on their property, but don't want the stove to burn inside their house. Maybe it's the smell that bothers them. That's my only guess, but I do agree that it sounds rather strange.

They are burning their burnable garbage so it doesn't go to landfill. People here do it alot because we have to pay for each bag we put out.

The only thing that would make any sense to me is if it is an outdoor wood furnace used to heat the house.A lot of people use outdoor wood furnaces for heat in my area.
