greeting with the right hand

How is it that we always extend the right hand as a greeting and not the left hand, and where does this originate from?

I've read it somewhere that in ancient times, weapons are usually held by the right hand and to show friendship, the right hand is empty, same as the counterpart, thus shaking hands.
