Actually it has several legal benefits.
(1) you can be covered on your spouses insurance
(2) cheaper insurance rates
(3) shared financial responsability
(4) Easier to get a home loan
(5) You can make medical decisions for your unconscious spouse
(6) tax breaks
(7) benefeciary of their estate
Marriage just legalizes the union.
