Headphones (also known as earphones, stereophones, headsets, or the slang term cans) are a pair of transducers that receive an electrical signal from a media player or receiver and use speakers placed in close proximity to the ears (hence the name earphone) to convert the signal into audible sound waves. So it can make your hearing ability low because it is close to your ears so your ears tend to be used in loud sound so when people call you in a low voice there is a tendency that you can hear it. So if you use earphones you must not make the sound loud.

I do not believe that the earphones make a person deaf as it is the volume of the sound going through the headphones and into your ears that makes a person deaf. The louder the music or sound the harder it is on the ears. We just need to make sure we do not put our music up too loud. I see people blasting their music while having the headphones on and keep telling them that this is not good for their hearing.

people use earphones because their hearing ability is decreasing. it will keep decreasing doesn't matter they use a earphone or not.
