why do people do these things at retail stores???

So I work for a major retail company, and some of the things that I see people just amazes me! Do they not know what the employees of these stores have to do at the end of the night, or do they just not care?? Like I said, I work for a major retail store, and some of the things I've seen people do just blows my mind. I've thought about times when I was the one shopping, and tried to think of any given time that I may have done such a thing, but haven't come up with any. For instance, is it really necessary to open up sealed packages to see what's in it? Is the picture on the outside not good enough? Most items tell us exactly what's in the package, and in some cases it tells you the dimensions of these items. Why do we have to open things up? AND on top of that, if we decide to get this item...instead of taking the one we opened, we have to take one that's still sealed. Here's an example. I had a couple of ladies one day ask me if we had a certain item in the back because the one on the shelf "looked" like it had been opened. I went to the back, and got them one. When I handed it to them, the first thing they did was open it!!! Why?!?! I do not understand this. If they didn't want one that someone else opened, why in the world would they open it??? This particular case they did end up purchasing that one, but there have been many times when the person did not purchase it...after opening it. Another case...I was helping a couple with luggage. They wanted a certain size, and the only way we sell that size is in a set. They opened up the set (which I can understand this one), went through it, and decided to get it. BUT, after all of this, the woman told me to get her one from the back because she didn't want the one that THEY went through. WHY??? If I open something, chances are I'm planning on buying it, and I will buy the one I opened. Another question. Is it really my fault if the store is out of something? I can't help it that we sold the ones we had, and haven't got more in yet. Why am I the one who gets yelled at if you were just too late in coming to the store for something. Also, if it is our policy to NOT be able to hold something (like clearance items) why do I get yelled at for not breaking policy?? I can't break it for myself, so why should I be able to for someone else? If there's something on clearance that I want, I have to either be off, be on break, or be on lunch...purchase the item right then, and take it to my car. There's no way around this one, and I can lose my job for not doing it that way. The same thing goes if I hold it for someone else. If it's clearance, I can't hold it...for anyone! Is this my fault that my store follows company policy?? I know other stores out there that are willing to hold these items, but if they get audited, these people can lose their jobs. If they want to risk that, that's their business...I'm not willing to risk it so someone can save a buck. One last thing. Why is it, if we pick something up, and then later decide we don't want it, why do we just drop it wherever we're at? Wouldn't the nice thing to do be to give it to the cashier at the end? I have heard people complain about certain stores being dirty, and having things all over the place, but no one wants to realize that we are part of why there's things all over the place. Rather than putting it back where we got it, or giving it to an employee, or giving it to the cashier at the end, we just put it wherever. What if that's the last one? What if someone else might want it? Then that person isn't going to get it, and probably be pissed off at us because they think we don't have it, but really those socks are laying somewhere over in toys. For instance...I worked for blockbuster for 3 years, and when we would do inventory we would find movies all over the place. It's no wonder people can't get the things they want sometimes...other people just drop things where they want to. No one is perfect, we're not going to find everything. I don't have a radar that tells me there's something in my department that doesn't go there. Maybe some of you out there can explain some of these things to me. I mean, is it really that hard to keep the item with you until you checkout, and tell the cashier you've decided not to get it? I understand not wanting to walk all the way back to where you got it from, but you can give it to someone who will.

It sounds to me like you need a vacation from work. A few years back I worked for Victoria's Secret, working retail sucks. Never again.

yes you are right, I do need a vacation!! lol. I actually really like working retail, I just hate some of the things people do there. It just blows my mind how inconsiderate people are, but yet these same people are the first ones to bad mouth others!

I feel your pain, and I work for wal-mart, I actually work in Mens apparel, and it upsets me when customers open the packages in the mens underwear and sock section...i don't understand Y either!!!! It's hard putting the socks and underwear back in the pack, and taping it up afterwards. It's pointless opening it up when the sizes and pictures are simply on packages like you said.
