Hi! I have acid reflux and I usually eat apples to neutralize the acid in my stomach. Most of the time it works! Also, if you want to avoid that burning sensation in your esopahgus and under your ribcage, you better stop smoking and go easy on the coffee, spicy food and alcohol.

Now can you eat any of these trigger foods? Small amounts, or do you have to avoid them all together?

I avoid trigger foods altogether. My therapist recommends that you let your esopahgus and your stomach heal completely for more than six months before you even attempt to slowly reintroduce the "trigger foods" in your diet. Anyway, for me, I would rather not risk it. I've worked so hard to get myself symptom free and i am not about to throw that out becuase of a tiny sip of coffee.

Huge change! I was one of those people who eat on the run and I eat all the wrong stuff. Changing my diet wasn't easy but since I am so determined to get rid of the burning sensation in my stomach, chest and throat, I did what I had to do. Thank God I am now symptom free! You can do it too. Try using a journal to record all the things that you eat for the day so that you can keep track of everything. Goodluck and God Bless!

You are most righteous! You are inspiring me to beat this thing and make it heal...I didn't realize how much junk I ate. How did you start on your diet...Big change?

My doctor gave me proton pump inhibitor PPI (omnipron) but I stopped taking them two months ago sued resorted to apples. I was told that PPI actually does your stomach more harm than good. It represesses the acid but the thing is, it also makes your stomach vulnerable to harmful bacteria becuase it eliminates all the acid. Your stomach needs acid to get rid of the bacteria. Apples have natural antacids. If you just watch your diet and change your lifestyle, hopefully, your tummy will not give you too much trouble.

Thanks for the tip, I have acid reflux. I take Prilosec everyday, that works real good, but it cost alot. I would prefer using naural remedies.

Hello Polly, Yeah Prilosec is very expensive. It's a proton pump inhibitor just like the one I used to take - omnipron. The bas thing about PPI is that eventually, your body gets immune to a single dose and them you start feeling really bad. The next thing you know, you are downing more than one pill a day and it will cost you a fortune! My therapist suggested excercise, proper diet and lots of highly alkaline food like apples, cabbages and licorice. Also, stay with in your ideal body weight. So far, it's working for me. The bonus is that my skin looks great with those fresh fruits and vegetables in my diet!

Thanks for the advice! I used to drink coffee all the time and I loved spicy food. Then it started hitting me back. I barely drink coffee anymore and I avoid spicy food if I can.

Good! You should avoid carbonated beverages. Carbonated beverages brings out some nasty bouts of acid reflux for me. Having a healthy diet is best.

i thought i was having a hard attack on the train a few days ago. My left chest hurts like hell and I was gasping for breath. Maybe they didn't turn on the ventilation.

or maybe you had a heartburn. It happens sometime you know when the acid interferes with your breathing. I had that expereince once in the grocery and I thought I was having a heart attack too but since the pain was on the right side of my chest, it's couldn't have been my heart. my doctor told me later that it was heartburn. It sure was painful!
