How old were you when you first learned to read fluently?

I started school in the September I was 4, and my mum had been teaching to read ever since my birthday in April. I could read fluently by the time I went to school, and was well ahead of my age group. I think I gave me a massive advantage, and would definitely aim to have my child reading before they started school. I don't think that it's hard to teach a child to read, unless they have specific learning difficulties. My mum worked hard and intensively on teaching me to read and I really appreciate it.

I think that I learned to read accidentally. When my father used to read to me, I followed the words as he read and in that way learned to recognise entire words. My earliest memory of reading was of a reading class which must have been in the first year, all the other's where stumbling along as they tried to spell out words, but I was reading fluently and was way ahead of the rest in the book that we were using when the teacher called for me to read, and I had to leaf back through trying to find the place where the rest of them had got up to :-)

I was really advanced. Reading was always a big thing in my house growing up. I was going thru Nancy Drew books by the dozen by the time I was 6. I'm trying to bring up my kids the same way. And I find the computer is great for that. My kids are learning how to read fast trying to get around the internet and play their games. I tell them that if they want to play they'll have to figure out the words themselves. It pushes them to learn. That's not to say I won't help them.. I do.. but I don't read it for them..

I started reading around 4 years old. Soon after, I began collecting baseball cards and began reading even more. I got my first paper route around 10 years old and that's when my reading really took off. I would sit and read the sports section everyday before I began delivering the newspaper. Lloyd

My daddy started teaching me how to read when I was about 3, and by the time I started school at 6, I had already read most of the classics, and had already started reading sci-fi such as Ray bradbury, and Isaac Asimov. I still read about 4 books a week.

Thanks for your reply. I was reading nothing much else but science fiction when I was in my teens. A real escapist!

I was 6 years old as we had RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) in our neighborhood that would come around each week and give out books to us. There was one book, Curious George I kept reading til I was able to read it through and through and believe my passion for reading starting then. I am forever grateful for that program to reach out to us kids in addition to the public library and school library, my teacher inspired us to see reading as fun and its always been that way for me.

I was about four years old when I began reading books aloud to myself. My parents read to me from a very early age and my mother stayed at home, so that probably helped, as well.

I was taught when I was 6 how to sound out the words. But reading didn't come into importance for me until my sophomore of high school. I wasn't doing well, naturally, so they put me in a special reading class, where they taught me to read, not just sound out the words. Been hooked ever since.
