List 10 things that make you happy, that do NOT involve money. Can you do it??

And be specific - "My family" is too general. Some families don't make each other happy:) Here's my own list: 1. A phone call from my mom when she wants to vent to me about her day. It makes me feel valued by my mom, and an important part of her life. 2. My boxer furbaby's "smile." She really can smile at me when she wants to play, and she knows*just* how to turn her head to the side, and make her ears flop, to make me laugh and put down my book/laptop/whatever to play with her. 3. When a student hugs me for no reason whatsoever, and says "I love you Miss ________."4. When I accomplish a hard task that I've been working on for quite a while (such as NaNoWriMo, or my electronic portfolio, or getting my Masters degree.) 5. The smell of fresh coffee beans. 6. Handwritten letters received in the mail, even if they are from friends who live within a ten minute drive. 7. A chance to sleep in on a Saturday morning. 8. A long, hot shower without feeling rushed to finish so I can go somewhere or do something. 9. Reading the last page of an exceptionally well written book. 10. Watching the face of a loved one or friend open a gift that I have chosen for them, and knowing that it will be*the* perfect gift. What's on your list?

This is my favorite part of your response: "there are lots of things that can make us happy everyday even without paying for it." That is exactly how I feel! Getting paid on mylot is cheating though :p (that's money) :) I am totally jealous about the napping/sleeping whenever you want - that would be cool!

First of all yours is a wonderful discussion which did not flash my mind at all. Thanks for posting this discussion. 1. When my husband just calls me to tell "I love you" when he really feels very lonely. 2. When my 2 1/2 yrs old son speaks to me on my phone. 3. When my mom-in-law tells hema you have done a great job 4. When my father-in-law scolds me and corrects me 5. When I see my family after a month's time and spend time with them 6. When our family members exchange feelings towards one other 7. When my manager appreciates me for something 8. When I see a crystal clear blue sky without any clouds 9. When I go on travelling with my hubby 10. When I meet my friends 11. When I see the beautiful nature And there are many things, generally I don't give importance to money. So, I can feel happiness in each and every small or big thing I do which doesn't involve money in it.

Thank you! I am thankful to all of the wonderful people who have taken the time to answer my discussion :) I love talking to children on the phone, by the way. I don't have children of my own (yet) but I do have family members with children and a brother who is younger than me by over twenty years, and I can remember how cute he used to be on the phone when he was two years old right on up to five. Sometimes, at ten, he can still make me laugh!

Aww, I love my pets. They are like family to me! When I was living in an apartment, I was always sooo happy to visit a friend or relative who had a dog, just so I could get in some quality pet time :D Now I have my own Lola, and she is wonderful! And being able to help people who need help always makes me feel good as well. The smell of rain - that one is also a great one! Great answers :)

Favorite music, my favorite movies, going for a walk or drive to nowhere, thinking about my dreams, seeing my granddaughter, reading a good book, spending quiet time alone, a nice hot cup of coffee on a cold day, thinking about the home I want to build, planning a long trip, thinking about summer in the winter and winter in the summer, the cool crisp fall air, a favorite food...There are a lot more things that make me happy. I don't want to feel bad or sad. Happy things are always on my mind.

Cool crisp air, nice hot coffee on a cold day, thinking about the home you want to build. . . I have to say you have a way with words! You have me wanting to read more - are you an author? Having happy things always on your mind is the best way to stay happy, I think. People who WANT to be happy generally are, and those who WANT to be bitter/dissatisfied/angry generally are. I'm with you - I'd rather be happy :)

A handwritten love letter from my Marine husband who is currently serving in Iraq. 3. When I receive a surprise call from my parents who live half-way around the world. 4. When my husband gives me a massage without me asking for one. 5. An email or card from a good friend whom I haven't seen or spoken to in awhile. 6. Getting my driver's license at the age of 35! 7. Someone telling me I've done a good job at something. 10. Learning a new hobby. My latest is to crochet and I just made a baby blanket for a friend.

I love when children stop what they are doing to give you a hug! It is just so sweet of them :) It makes you feel loved, and your heart just wants to burst from how much you love them in that moment. And massages are a great thing - nothing at all wrong with those :) I wish I could learn to crochet. I could never figure it out, and my friend who is great at it gave up trying to teach me in frustration. Apparently I am utterly hopeless :D

I love reading books! It is one of my favorite ways to pass the time. Finishing a great book really does make me happy. Finding a great book on sale at the store makes me happy. Finding books by authors I have loved in the past makes me happy :) I also love Friday evenings. I usually do not have school (unless I am substituting for Saturday school) so I can stay up as late as I want and then sleep in the next morning. Fridays are the best night of the week!!

I love heavy rain and heavy showers! I love the sound the rain makes on the roof, and the cozy feeling of being safe and warm inside my house. It makes me appreciate my home more than I normally do. It reminds me that I am very lucky indeed to have a roof over my head. And its just plain peaceful to listen to the rain. :)

My precious animal is a huge contributor to the happiness in my own life! She is just adorable, and can almost always make me laugh or smile. She's great for helping keep my mood up. Of course, sometimes, she wants to play just a little bit more than I do, but for the most part she is the perfect pet! I am single right now, but the hugs from husband and children every morning sounds nice. :)

1- When I wake up before my kids do and I get to see them sleeping soundly in bed. 2- When my almost 2 year old daughter says thank you moma. 3- When we all sit down to watch a movie as a family and get some great cuddle time in. 4- When we read stories at night and both of my kids intently listen for 20 minutes. 5- Any time I can spend at Disneyland in California. 6- When I see the sunlight shining in my windows and warming up a spot on the carpet, I love to go lay there and enjo the warmth for a minute. 7- When we take our kids on short hikes in the mountains, breathing in fresh air and enjoying nature. 8- When my kids are being well behaved in the store and not asking for every toy or candy we pass. ( Then I usualy reward them with a toy or candy, go figure) 9- When I can watch my husband and the kids play. When they are all laughing out of control. 10- When I can remember the things that I am thankful for, that make me smile. It is so easy to forget what we have to be thankful for. I needed this so much. Thank you for your wonderful idea. My day will go much smoother now.

Again with the hugging - I guess a lot of huggers have found their way to myspace. :) (I just posted a somewhat rambly response to another poster about how I enjoy getting hugs from my students. They are so sweet!) Seeing the view from the top of a hill sounds nice. I don't think I've ever really been on top of a hill (I live on the coast). I was in the mountains once - I wonder if that counts? I have seen the view from the top of the Eiffel Tower. As well as from the top of the Arc de Triumph. And the Empire State Building. But no hills. . . I guess I should add that one to my list :)

(not in any order) 1. The scent of cedar shavings. It reminds me of fairtime and showing and makes me crave for another May 2. Lambing days. Watching little twins stand up and take their first glimpse of the yard makes a year of husbandry more than worth it. 3. Getting phone calls when I didn't call someone first. Makes me feel loved. 4. Driving through the country. It's so lovely! 5. Baby pigs. The cuteness is definitely worth the smell. 6. When my cat sleeps on me when I stay home sick. 7. A good day's work. Nothing like shoveling pig pens to put life in perspective for you. 8. Being on a horse. It makes me feel like I could fly. 9. Getting to rest after working hard. Doesn't it feel better when you feel like you've earned it? 10. Getting up and getting to school before my friends, just so I can greet each and every one of them.

I agree about the scent of cedar - it's a homey, comforting scent. You actually did a wonderful job with your entire list - I can't think of anything on it that can be attributed to money in any way! I can tell you aren't the slightest bit materialistic - that is such an enviable trait to have! I would love to see lambs being born, or taking their first steps. That sounds like such a happy, rewarding experience :)

Well, because its cake! Cake is always good :) And the last piece is pretty good - I think I like the "first" piece too. Like the first spoon of ice cream is usually better than the rest, but that last spoonful is pretty terrific too :)

Compliments are definitely something to smile about! Especially when it's over a new hairstyle, or a new outfit, or something. I also love to get compliments on something I have done well - a project, or my writing, or whatever. They just almost always make you feel good :) And I love jokes as well. Stand up comedy can almost always make me laugh. I just plain love to laugh! (And now I'm going to spend the rest of the day with that particular song from Mary Poppins stuck in my head...)

You are absolutely correct when you say that life is too good to waste on superficial things!!! I have never had the pleasure of slipping into a private jacuzzi anywhere, but I bet that would be a really great moment. And no traffic when I'm running late - I love it when that happens! Have you had any of your poetry published? Where could we see it? :)

Getting random phone calls, with no real reason. Just to talk. 4. Going for a walk in the woods, and painting all day. 5. Watching the boyfriend smile to himself, while he's watching television. It instantly makes me smile. 6. When my train is pulling into the station, and I can see the boyfriend standing there waiting when I look out the window. 7. The noise that my guinea pig makes when I walk into his room. 8. Watching shows like Animal Cops and seeing an animal that was abused or neglected getting a nice home and everything working out well for them. 9. Seeing a butterfly just gliding through the air in the summer time. 10. Hand written letters sent in the mail from friends, even when you talk to them online and on the phone everyday.

OMG, this one is so funny: 2. Seeing my daughter smile when you call her a butthead and make goofy faces at her. That is exactly the kind of relationship I had with my own mom! She was hilarious, and silly, and lots of fun! As a matter of fact, she still is :) I hope when I have children some day that I can be just as playful and loving.

10. Writing in my journal. Sounds goofy, but I've been writing daily in my journal for almost 12 years now. 9. Picking a topic and learning about it. I'm SO geeky, it hurts. My girlfriend and my friends have so many different interests from me that I choose one a week to learn about. 8. Looking up new recipes. Being an aspiring chef, it's always exciting to find something new to try... even if it fails! 7. Playing video games. I'm a child of geekdom, I like the interactivity and the solitude and the peace I get from playing games. Allows me to relax. 6. Swimming in my hometown. There are so many beautiful lakes in North/Central Canada that it's breathtaking. 5. Hiking near my hometown. Again, the scenery is amazing and diverse. Makes one think about their place in the universe. 4. Playing with my nephews. I never thought I'd want to be an aunt, but my boys are so smart and full of life. Almost makes me want some of my own. Almost. ... not quite. 3. Talking to friends and family online or over the phone, or going out for coffee or something like that. Something simple and easy, with no strings or heavy expectations. 2. Waking up to my girlfriend in the morning when she's buried under her 4 blankets and the 3 she stole from me and the content smile she has. It's makes the chilly mornings worthwhile. 1. Sitting on a parkbench, or in a restaurant, or in a bus, just listening and watching the world bustle by. Observing the different people around me, what they do, how they act, how they're reacting to others... It's almost relaxing, in some warped way. and just for a bonus! I also love, but hate!, reading the last page of an exceptionally well written book. I love it because a well written book is bliss, but it is so bittersweet to end! Happy Tuesday!

Wonderful response! I love being slightly geeky myself - that's really not something I have ever thought of as a bad thing :D I wish I loved to hike. It would be such great exercise, and a way to get outside and become a part of nature, AND the gorgeous scenery you mention would be a plus. I just don't really get into the whole outside-sweaty-bugs biting you thing. But I love the idea of it!! People watching is loads of fun, I agree with you on that point :)

Here is my share of 10 things that make me happy. I'm not very hard to please, making some of these things seem a bit shallow for some. But, hey, they're mine and they're all I need to have to be happy. I didn't rank the items I listed, Though I made #1 the thing that makes me happy the most. Hope you enjoy reading them!10. Meet a stranger and receive a smile 9. An unexpected message from a long lost friend 8. Finding an old picture of your family when you were still a kid 7. Approached by someone for help, knowing they trust you on something 6. Being able to play basketball (I'm healthy and I have friends!) 5. Singing and dancing, the better if for a crowd 4. Receiveing (or giving) a kiss and a hug 3. Finish reading a book 2. Knowing that my parents are happily together after 27 years with us loving kids staying in one house as a happy family 1. The idea that one day, I'd have someone to love and build my own family. An extra: Happiness for me? It's waking up in the middle of the night, shifting blankets and feeling the heat of the person next to you. You turn around, and see her in her most innocent state. You smile, kiss her face gently so as not to wake her up. You turn around and a forms on your face. Then, you feel an arm wrap around your waist and you know that it would never get any better than that. Hope I made someone smile reading my post. :)

Finishing a book can make me happy as well, if it is a good book and if I enjoyed the ending. There are times that I really just plain don't enjoy certain books :) But I still love to read in general - it is one of my favorite ways to pass the time!! And the last part of your post, about waking up in the middle of the night - that is so beautiful that just reading it made my heart ache. So sweet, and loving. I hope you let her read this comment of yours, so that she knows even more how much you cherish her!
