Open source is the future, everybody that has downloaded an open source software can see the code to know how the software works and if he wants, he can modidy e redistribute it. I this way open source software is very robust because all the world can find bugs and correct them. But, can you gain money with open source?

The Linux Desktop is a major barrier since Microsoft still dominates it, and with the end-user heavily reliant on the software giant's spoonfeeding. Still, open source is making great progress even on the Windows platform, with Mozilla and a slew of other applications becoming more and more popular by the day. Check out portableapps.com for an entire suite of open source software you could put in your flash drive. And what about the new Internet Explorer 7 from MS? Isn't it funny how they totally revised IE's interface to resemble... of all things... Firefox? My bet is open source may be held back by Gates & Co., but it is inevitable. It's inherent in the nature of the inernet that technology can and will be shared...

I would love to see open source projects taking over the paying software published by some greedy companies, especially Microsoft. I use Linux, Firefox, Open Office and even Latex to produce some professional documents despite the unhappiness of some secretatries who have only heard about word. On the other hand, I hate to say it, but I don't expect the big shark will let the open source movement take over. They will just use their armies of lawyers and file cases about intellectual property infringement until the open source movement collapses.

I'm supporting open source, particularly reactos.org, which aims to give us a Free M$ compatible OS, yes... an Operating System. It is safer to use an application which came from open source community than the privately made one, why? because open source's source code are there available and ready for us to review/view, whether the code is dangerous or not, of course we could add into it, compiled it and run it the way you want, that's the essence of Open source.

I've tried that OS.. It's in alpha and most all my programs don't work for it.. If only Linux and Microsoft worked together? That ouwld be nice.. Free operating system but the programs are not..

I also believe that open source is the future. But when is that future? Is it tomorrow, next month, next year or the next 10 years? Take linux for example, it has come a long way since Linus developed the kernel and several upgrading of it and the many tools and variants it has spawned..(ubuntu, suse, red hat, etc). It has dominated the server space but when will it conquer your desktop? I think Red Hat's business model is the way to gain money with open source. Service is the key product, giving away the OS and selling the know how. What do you think?

As far as gaining money with open source is concerned, our company is already doing it. We simply become experts on the open source software, then we sell our services and consulting work. What do you think? Simple, yet effective....
