How To Make A Homemade Board Game

My family loves to play board games. When the girls and their family come home for a visit, they will be found at the kitchen table till late in the night, playing board games. The problem is that board games are getting expensive to purchase these days. They are so great to play in winter when the kids cant go outside. This is a great way to make a homemade boardgame or several of different kinds. This is such a fun activity to make for Family Night. A great way to have fun. Making a simple board game is one of the easiest and fun things you can do on a rainy afternoon or for a family night activity. You will need: 4 PIECES OF DIFFERENT COLOR COPY PAPER 1 LARGE SHEET POSTER PAPER (cut the size you want your board for your game) Felt tip pens Glue stick Glue Dice First, cut a strip off the length of each piece of paper about one inch wide. Cut each of these strips into small squares. They don't have to be all the same size , in fact it's better if there are a few smaller pieces as well as a bunch of bigger squares. Draw a line around the piece of poster board which will be the track of your game play. A Capital "N" with rounded corners work super. Stick a start and finish square at each end: Then glue all of the little squares side by side along the line, until the entire line is covered. It's best if you mix up the colors so that not too many of the same color are sitting next to one another . Make a couple of "short cut" places to give the game a bit of interest: Making the two parts of the N look like 2 Capital A's Decorate any way your want. Remember, this is your game. You could number the squares if this takes your child's fancy. Take the remaining colored paper and cut each sheet into uniformly sized rectangles: On the backs of these write your game playing instructions such as "Miss a turn", "Move forward three spaces". It is more fun to elaborate a little so that they say things like "Win American Idol! Move forward two spaces" or "Slip on a banana peel, go back one space" etc. You and your child may want to come up with the card ideas together - so they are all familiar concepts to your child- "You need a has a nap, miss a turn", "Pancakes for dinner! Move ahead three spaces," Add some crazy ones such as "Meet a monkey who eats your lunch! Go back five spaces". You might want to add "Stay where you are" cards just so that the game play doesn't go too quickly. For teens you could ask questions on the card along with directions as to how to move on the board. You could make a family themed game , with pictures of relatives copied and put and on the board. You could come up with all kinds of different themes and looks. You could use a haunted house and all the instructions were spooky for Halloween. How about pirates, Wiggles, care bears and make the game board and card instructions fit in. No rules for these games and the possibilities are endless. Roll the dice to see who goes first she or he rolls the dice and moves the number of spaces shown. She picks up a card of the corresponding color to the place she has landed on and follows the instructions. If she is told to move ahead or back she does so, and her turn ends without picking up another card. Move to the next player. The older the child the more complicated you might like to make the rules. If you land on a square occupied by another counter, you have to do 20 star jumps or maybe if you land on a square marked with a star get a special star card which you can use to avoid squares marked with aliens (and alien marked squares might mean you have to change counters with another player or something) — really, there is no limit to how wild it could get. Make your game fun for any age. Great Family Night Activity. Have fun and never purchase commercial games again.

Thank you for this idea; but I must say it really made me laugh with happy memories. One of my daughters (a grown adult) was wanting to purchase a Golden Girls game for a friend of her because they both love that program so much. The only problem was, 5 years ago there was no game. She and I set about making a board game. We were meticulous using self-healing cutting mats and utility knives to cut out each section. We sat for hours and hours thinking of questions and answers; and finally had to devise rules for the game. Finally we found a nifty way to package it. It was ready weeks in advance of her friend's birthday and hidden in a secret place just waiting to be wrapped. Glory and behold, the night before the birthday my daughter went to get the game to wrap it, then came to me and asked if I had gotten it out and wrapped it for her. When I told her I had not we both realized that she had hidden it so well that even she couldn't remember where it was. It wasn't until a year later when she moved out that it was finally discovered. I wish you and your family many years of family gaming fun ~Donna

Donna, Thanks for sharing your personal experience with me. I laughed when you said she hid it so good that she could not find it. That sounds like me. I hid stuff all the time and cant find it. LOL

Oh, Villageanne, I love your discussion topic! It reminds me of when a good friend and I did something just like this. We had bought a version of Monopoly called Elvisopoly at the store and had been wearing it out, lol. So we decided to make our own version called Monkeeopoly, since we had both been really into the Monkees in our youth, and we drew a board and made up cards for the game. I even printed out Monkeeopoly money with the Monkees' guitar logo in the middle! I had totally forgotten about that part, but I remember doing it. We had so much fun playing our game until her young son got into the board game and messed some of the pieces up, but he's such a cutie and he didn't realize. We enjoyed our board game while it lasted, anyway! ^_^

There are so many "Opoly" games on the market now it is crazy. Some of them cost 50 bucks. I could not believe it. Games used to be less than 10 dollars each. Now I dont see how families can afford to purchase very many and they are so much fun for families to spend time together and really get to know each other. You will have to make another "Moneeeopoly" now. LOL

This is a good idea and one we homeschooler may just do for an art class. Thanks for sharing it. We pick up our board games and others at church rummage sales. So far we have gotten a few good old ones and a good hand full of newer ones along with hand held electronic ones. So we will include this along side those as soon as we get it done. Thanks again for sharing this one.

There is just something about homemade that appeals to me. I love homemade things better than commercial. Kids seem to be more involved with the learning process when they use hands on to make it themselves. I think family is so very important and I encourage time together as much as possible. Thanks for your comment and I hope you have fun making your own game

Your discussion brought back old memories. I used to live in a joint family and we were 5 kids in the house. We used to make a lot of these kinds of games to keep ourselves entertained. In one of my local children's magazine they used to get a lot of these kinds of board games printed. We used to tear them and then used to stick card board pieces on them to make them sturdy. Those were the good old days. Now I dont have time to play any game

thats awesome you got the family together and created a game. how crative! when i was little me and my sis always came up with weird games to play and had lots of fun. somehow i guess we always learned something new. (or ended up destroying something lol) we took everything we had and used things to make games. sometimes we would use simple things like just pen and paper. this game we'd play at night, we would start writng a letter in the dark, and at random times we would say "word" and the other person would give each other a word and it would just keep going. it was very funny nonesence. we never really played board games or made them. we just made everything else but that.

Cool game. It reminds me of the board games I used to play such as the Chinese Checkers, Scrabble, and the Snake and Ladder. Innovative ideas there that one can apply so as not to spend so much on board games.

A simple one we used to make when as kids, paste a photograph on a hard board, let it dry then cut it in different ways and after that you can jumble up the pieces . Give your kids to assemble it.That is real fun.
