how safe is sucralose?

February 7, 2007 7:15am CST
I have thrown away all my artificial sweetners because the aspartamine is bad for your health. I have been told to try sucralose as it is supposed to be better for you as it is made from sugar. I was wondering if it had any side effects and also if its made from sugar why doesn't it have the same effects on blood sugar as pure sugar does?

hey, michelle. thanks for running this post. i did a bit of a research about sucralose to enable to respond here, and guess what? it's found to be more carcinogenic, and the human body is not able to detoxify itself of organochlorine compounds, as in the case of sucralose. for more, info, check out the link below. (i'm sorry to post this --- i feel i just had to for everyone else's info before we all get too excited about sucralose and splenda) http://www.downtoearth.org/articles/sucralose_danger.htm

i've read about the dangers of aspartame and other artificial sweeteners, and i've heard that splenda is the only one without side effects. but it looks like it's effects are even worse. yeah, it's weird why we allow them to sell products that have not undergone thorough testings.

Thanks for the link. It is interesting that people are allowed to sell substances that haven't been adequately tested on people. I think I might just use fructose instead.

My school of thought is to not trust anything man made. Seriously, I wish I could have everything natural. I think that artificial sweetners are juat as bad for a person as refined sugar, if not worse. I could be paranoid too though, so take that into consideration.

I would tend to agree with you. However in this country Splenda is being marketing as something made from sugar so its healthy. I just wondered if it was true, and it seems like it isn't

I don't know much about sucralose but The other day on TV I saw a show about something called Stevia. It is a plant that you can grow in your back yard. They were picking the leaves and eating them. They said to boil the leaves to get the sweetness out for cooking, and recommended that you go to a garden center to get the plants, since it is difficult to grow from seed. This might be something to consider.

hey well it may be good for people suffering from diabetes as they are not allowed to eat sweeet things. so 4 them its good and also can be used as good sweetener it is known to be atleast 200 times more sweet than sugar. and if some of it fall on your hand then in that case you would be having its effect on your hand for a long time.

Stevia is an excellent source of sweetener. Its sweeter than sugar, comes from a plant, and has no affect on glucose levels. You can get a plant and grow it yourself, dry it and grind it. Or if green sweetener turns you off you can get it in liquid or non-chemically processed white at a health food store.

I've gotten rid of all my artificial sweeteners too. I don't buy anything with them in it. I think sucralose is also artificial. For a no-calorie sweetener, I like stevia. It's an all-natural herb that's much sweeter than sugar. It actually helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay. It increases glucose tolerance and helps improve digestion.

I don't use anything artificial, and hardly anything that is not completely organic. Sweeteners I use: succanat, fructose, maple syrup, sugar in the raw. Also molasses. Depends on what needs sweetened! I trust stevia, but it lumps up in cold beverages so I don't use it that often. I believe stevia is low in calories, if that's why you're looking for something other than straight-up fructose... it's pretty good. I know lots of people who swear by it.

I don't think they know enought about sucralose yet since it is pretty new. To my knowledge, there aren't any bad side effects that they have come out with. I would think it would still give you a spike in your blood sugar though since it is made with sugar. I personally don't like it as much as Equal. I don't think that's aspertame but I'm not sure. I think it's one of the other ones that isn't as bad for you. I think aspertame is sweet and low.

Anything artificial is bad for your body, because it is not natural. You would be better of taking a teaspoon of real sugar. I rather have a real peace of chocolate or a piece of candy once in a while then eating sweets with artificial sugar. A friend of mine told me, that he has a friend who was in a lot of joint pain and all kinds of problems and never felt good, till she stopped drinking diet soda. Apparantely she is feeling fine now.

I don't know how safe it is, but I'm leary of anything artificial. I can't stand the taste of the artificial sweetners. They leave a bad taste in my mouth. If I get too much of it I get a headache too. That's even just from one can of pop with an artificial sweetner in it. I think if it bothers me like that, it can't be good for me and do question how safe it is.

I have been using artificial sweetners, and I find so far no problem. Especially for milk, without sweetner, I can't drink. It also acts as a very good slimmer.
