New York City Cab Driver Returns Bag Of Diamond Rings

A taxi driver returned a black bag carrying 31 diamond rings to a passenger who earlier had given him a 30-cent tip on an $11 ride. Hours after Osman Chowdhury dropped off the passenger, he tracked her down through a flurry of phone calls and returned the bag, which she had left in the taxi's trunk. The unidentified woman, who said she was a jeweler, offered a $100 reward. Chowdhury accepted the money to cover the fares he lost while tracking her down. My question to you is this: Would you have returned the diamonds? What do you think about a jeweler giving the taxi driver a 30-cent tip? And what is your opinion of Mr. Chowdhury, a native of Bangladesh? LLoyd

I think this was awesome of the Driver doing something like this. He really could have just kept on his merry way and turned the Bag in at the end of his shift, and maybe she would have never called? I dispatch for a Taxi company so I know what goes on around where I work, and so you learn a lot. As for the Tip, the normal far is around 10% on the dollar, so this was a little too low, but when she gave $100 reward, that should have made him feel a little better, as he could have gotten nothing. But when a conscience bothers you you do what you gotta do, and it will come back to you ten fold.

That tip was more than a little low, it was insulting! A 30 cent tip on a $10.70 fare is only 3%. She could have easily given the drive $1, still a little low but a nice round number. The only reason I would give a cab driver that minuscule a tip was if I was really dissatisfied with his service and wanted to make a point.

I would have given the driver one of the diamond rings. She could have gotten nothing in return if he wasn't honest. Lloyd

Hello. I too think the Driver of a man of quality character. If I'm not mistaken, the $100 was for the fares the driver lost while chasing her down. A 10% per tip is rather modest to me. I would glady pay it. Have a good day dispathing at the Taxi company. Lloyd

It was very nice that he returned the diamonds because he knew who lost them. She was in possesion of 31 diamonds she could have afforded more than a 30 cent tip, that was very cheap on her part. He did deserve a reward and he was right in accepting it. I think Mr. Chowdhury is a very honest man with lots of morals but where he is from is really irrelevant. There are lots of honest people, not from Bangladesh, who would have done the same thing.

Hello Howard. I didn't mean anything negative by mentioning the fact that Mr. Chowdhury was from Bangladesh. I know that many people would have done the same thing. I agree that a 30-cent tip was very cheap on her part. Thanks for your input. Lloyd

No problem. The reason she probably has 31 diamonds in her possession is because of the kind of cheap tips she gives out. LOL Have a good day. + :)
