I am sure from other discussions I've read that there is a wide variety of religions represented on mylot. This evening I realized that I really do not know much about other religions. I am not looking to convert, I am very happy with my religion but I would like to know how many different religions are represented on mylot and a brief overview of your beliefs. Example, I am a Christian I believe God is the creator of all things, by believing in Him I will receive eternal life in Heaven when I die, and that each day I desire to grow closer to Him. Please no bashing of other religions any such posts will receive a - rating by me. I am interested in learning, not in arguing.

I am Pagan. "Pagan" is kind of an umbrella term for a group of religions, and exactly which religions fit under that term is sometimes a hot topic of debate. Wicca is probably the most well known religion, but modernly practiced versions of ancient religions from all over the world also fit this title. My specific beliefs are Celtic, most commonly associated with the British Isles. I believe in multiple deities, both male and female. I celebrate holidays which mark the turning of seasons, as well as personal milestones in my life. My primary Goddess is a mother figure to me, and I first came to know her when I was four years old. I believe that when I die I will travel into the Otherwold, where my spirit will continue its journey. Whether than journey will lead me to Earth again I do not yet know, but I believe it is possible.

Very well written on this. I'm a pagan as well and it can encompas such a huge number of people with varying beliefs. Just as Christianity can as well by it's different denominations. Most of what Lecanis said I believe in as well. I do believe in the Goddess mother figure as well as the male counter part. I believe when I die I will go to the Summerlands where I will await until it's time for reincarnation. If you are looking for more information on paganism there are some wonderful sites on the web on it. I'd suggest checking out this site first: http://www.witchvox.com/ It has a lot of information on different forms of paganism. It's a great first step towards others.

Thank you for this information, I have heard of Pagan before but did not realize there were different groups. Guess in one respect your religion is similiar to Christianity and how we have Baptist, Lutherans, Methodists and such.

In my life I have been Catholic, Buddhist, and even a Baptist preacher, but anything I say about thses various beliefs would be colored by my personal experiences and probably not very objective. Might I suggest that you read Huston Smith's "The Religions of Man". It is widely considered the best book ever written explaining the various world religions.

I'm helping an elderly couple for a week or so until they move to an assisted living home and last night I asked her about this book. She didn't have it but had read it and thinks it's in the church library but not sure. I'll check into it Sunday. I guess for many years I too was a seeker but possibly for different reasons. I was seeking within different Christian churches, different denominations. I didn't end up a Free Methodist because of the specific doctrine but more because of my own spiritual growth and how the people within the church have helped and encouraged that growth.

Thank you, I believe I've heard this book mentioned in other discussions and will certainly check it out. I must say the little I know you have covered an interesting range of religions yourself.

You are right. There must be people belonging to 20 to 25 different religions, pouring their thoughts here. That is better for us to know view points from every religion. The major religions are Christiany, Hinduism, Islam, Chinese religion?, Buddhism, Jainism, Zorastrian, etc etc.

I hover between Christianity and Zoroastrianism. Mostly I am digusted by the attitudes of my fellow Christians to those who differ from them in some way. I have seen Republican Christians say that no-one can be Democrat and Christian (and vice versa), I have see conservatives call liberals sinners, I have seen articles dripping with virtiol attacking fellow christians who disagree by as much as a jot or tittle from those who penned the article. Frankly, I'd much rather not be associated with those who have hijacked the term 'Christian.'

I was raised Methodist but have changed since then. I am now a member of The Church Of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints, commonly called Mormon. I believe I joined this church in 1993. It has totally changed my life and I am so greatful to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ for their sacrafices on my behalf. I try really hard to live a rightous life. I make mistakes but know that as a result of Jesus's sacrifice, I can repent and try again tomorrow. I know that the choices we make here on this earth will determine where we are when we die. I long to spend eternity with my family, Heavenly Father and Jesus

I see some book reccomendations. May I suggest that if you want to know the truth about a religion, ask someon who is that religion. I have found many books on Mormonism to be untrue.

Well, don't dispare, I looked for a church or as I like to put it "church shopped" for nearly 5 years before I found the church I am now a member of. Big help for me was reading the book "A Purpose Driven Life" you might read it. I'll keep you in my prayers and agree, God is everywhere and I do feel closest to Him in nature but also know the importance of fellowship with others.

I am not religous. I consider myself spiritual, instead. I grew up attending a Christian church and as I got older, I was interested in learning more about other religions. I started attending many churches of different faiths... I was very much turned off by the Dogma in religion and decided to find my own truth. I believe in a loving God, not a punishing God that should be feared. I think fear and love are opposites. My beliefs include the belief of a 'Higher Power', afterlife, karma, dharma, angels and spirit guides. I practice meditation and prayer on a regular basis. I believe we all have a direct connect to God. I believe we are all 'of God'. I beleieve we are here to learn (experience) for God and to help others' along the way (physically, emotionally, spiritually, monetarily...any way we can). Treating others the way I want to be treated is a 'cardinal rule' that I live by.

I am also Christian, but I'd rather call myself Presbyterian, to give people a better idea of what group of Christians I belong to. What group of Christians are you in? Just as Muslims are divided into Shiite and Sunni, and Jews have a number of sub-groups of their own. "Christian" is awfully general, in my opinion.

i was baptised a roman catholic/christian. but i have not practiced (meaning go to church) any of it since i was 18 and moved out of the house. i had always had objections and questions towards the catholic church and since my questions were answered with demands of "BELIEVE WHAT I TELL YOU AND NOTHING ELSE" comments, it turned me down. and after doing my own reaserch on the catholic church i've realized i'm not putting my children through the same thing and i will let them decide on their on what religion / path they would like to chose since they have to believe and have a full understanding of the religion which they can't do until they're teens or adults. i still consider myself a christian since christians have many denominations branching from it. i believe in god and jesus, i haven't read the bible, but when my children are older i will tell them all about it. i live mylife caring and being kind towards others and trying not to judge those. i never say they anyone is evil, or do i have any objections towards a persons sexuality or race and i respect other religions as well. i feel i'm living my life well even though i don't attend church...i have my reasons.

Much has been written about religions by this time on your discussion. I would share my thoughts. Religiion is a set of principles and rituals that explain and suggest the existence of the super natural force one beleive and quite often is dogmatic and suggestive. I am a born hindu but a free religion man.The subtle difference between religion and spiritualism need to be understood and there lies the freedom. If religion is a cult spiritualism is the free and independent research and search of god and the self. Knowing the self is knowing the god since one is the universal energy and the other a a part of it though seperated. From the explanation i find all old schools of thought suggested different deities and masters and worship for individual needs. Later spiritual masters may be by realizing the un focussewd attention of the people suhggessted the single force or god concept and came the difference. In fact both are the same . there is one and only one universal energy in the universe and there cannot be a second energy since the second is also merged with the one. But the different deity concept in Pagan and Hibnduism the old religions of the world is more simple and easy to comprehend for the primitive mind . It is like this. We have only one mother and she may be in different moods. sometimes she may be ferocious, and some other time sober but both is mother. similarly the different deity concept is also based on the same god but in different perceptions. It is better to be spiritual than religious. being religious you are committed and is a prisoner of accepted principles. One need to have the freedom of thinking else there would not have been different religion in the world, a fact even the founders and promoters of the various religions often forget.

i am a sikh by religion , just like bible is the holy book of christians, guru granth sahib is our holy book and the most sacred place for sikhs is the golden temple of Amritsar, which was made by our 5 th guru (preacher/ teacher about 400 yrs back), it is made on tank and people even take dip in the holy water, i am a radha swami too (it doesnt means i have converted), we have a guru (religiou teacher) there who tell us or preach us about God, so i believe that God is within us and we can find him there only, although there are much deeper things, but i dont know i will be able to explain them clearly to you.
