Why Do We Cut a Cake on Our Birth Days?

I am from India. In our Country the birth day is celebrated by getting new clothes to the Birth dayBoy or Birth day Girl, preparing some nice dishes for the family. God is worshopped and blessings are saught from him for the Kid or the birth day boy. Cakes are not cut traditinally in our country on Birth days I used to winder and still wonder why a Cake is cut on any one's Birth Day ? What is the history behind this tradition? And where exactly this tradition has started?
