Unlike ordinary applications, which reside on your hard drive, a Java applet resides on a Web server. When a Web page containing a Java applet is viewed with a Java-compatible browser, the applet's code is downloaded to your computer and executed within the browser window. Once a Java applet is downloaded to your computer, it operates very differently from applications written in other programming languages. Unlike JavaScript, which is interpreted by your browser, Java applets are separate executable programs. (This may seem like a small difference, but it is actually a rather large and important one.) Furthermore, unlike conventional programs, such as your browser or word-processor, most of the information needed to run any Java applet is contained in your browser, which is why browsers need to be Java-compatible in order to run a Java applet.

I own a amd64 3000+ it's not an pentium class, and it's not an intel product, it's product from advanced mircro devices, intel competitor, may be if compare with intel product, it could be equalised with pentium 4 class I don't really know it actually so correct me if i'm wrong, pretty confuse to compare speed this days, too many processor type on the market.
