Are there any animals that mate for life? I can't think of any. The closest I can think of are penguins who mate for one season. Did you see that movie "March of the Penguins?" It was absolutely amazing. Every year the penguins would mate, and then the males would stay on the land and care for the eggs while the females went back hundreds of miles to the water to feed. Then after several months, the females would go back to the males and find them by a special call that was unique to each couple. Then while the baby was growing up, they would alternate who stayed and who went back to feed. Granted, the next season, all ties were cut and it was off to find a new mate. Guess nothing lasts forever, right? But it was amazing to me to see the an amazing commitment that the penguins had to each other and their child, even if it was only for a year. We could learn a few things from those penguins! Gosh, those male penguins struggling throughout the winter in the frigid cold with no food for months while taking care of the egg until it hatched! Makes all those deadbeat dads look even more ridiculous. If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it. But if anyone knows of animals that mate for life, I'd be interested in hearing about them!
