I would say Hendrix, though he's highly overrated as a guitar player.

oh, and Steve Lukather, he plays on Toto and is a worldwide known studio guitar player for artists like Cher, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Elton John n many more.

I agree about Hendrix. But though he may be overrated, what he was was a consummate guitar player. What he lacked in skills, he made up for with fire (not the burning guitar kind) in his performances. Of all the greater skilled and better composers out there, he made me want to pick up the guitar.

I'd like to add Johnny Marr (The Smiths) to the list. He's done some AMAZING work. Oh, might as well add Anthony Field (The Cockroaches), too. LOL Why not?

Johnny Marr certainly deserves to be there, what a sound he created. I'd rather have his weave of lush rythmns than all of this widdly widdly look at me guitar playing form the others on the list.

I'd have to go 50:50 on this one. Slash and Eric Clapton. Both amazing guitarists and each has contributed so much in his own way.

Clapton by a wide margin, I'd say. He's been at it since the early '60s, in groundbreaking bands from the John Mayall Bluesbreakers to Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, and numerous solo albums. He was a legend even in his 20s. Some others I can think of off the top of my head would include Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers, Government Mule), Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Peter Buck (R.E.M.), B.B. King, and a bunch no longer with us, including Duane Allman and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I especially like the guitar work of Lindsay Buckingham. Also in his solo album of last year, he makes great riffs, melodys, you can always hear him playing, he has his 'own' sound. Like most of these offcourse, Clapton is fantastic, Jimi is a legend and Petty is maybe the best singer between those to me.

I have to go with Eric Clapton. His contributions to music are uncomparable. I did look at the top 100 list on the Rolling Stone site... I agree with their listings. However, Clapton is my favorite.
