My favourite media player is VLC (http://www.videolan.org). It does not need any codec installation because it already contains them and it is also very light and simple. Moreover it is used also in academic research for its functions of audio/video streaming server and client. Finally it is open source, so everybody can use it freely and developers can study it and improve it too. What about you?

If you like lightweight you should check out JETAUDIO sometime. Not only is it friendly on the resources, but the sound is brilliant!

I also use VLC alot. You can play hardly any file with it. And it has a great subtitle support. I love this app!
