There have been many shows over the years that deal with situations that go way beyond the normal. I'm talking about ones that deal with the strange and unusual, the paranormal, the ones that aren't something you see in your everyday life. Some of the more recent shows have been Ghost Whisperer, Supernatural, Charmed, Buffy, Angel to name just a few but there are older ones as well. The Twilight Zone, Bewitched, The Munsters along with a host of others. Do you watch shows like this? If so which ones are your favorites and why are they? If you don't watch shows like this then maybe you can tell us why not.

I love all those kinds of shows. Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Lost and the oldies too. I like to be able to suspend reality for awhile and know that there will be a happy ending. I loved Charmed. I could sort of relate to the girls even though I don't have any supernatural powers. The struggles of everyday life complicated by the curves life sends us. I haven't gotten into Supernatural for some reason. I tried to watch it at first but just didn't like it. Maybe too comic bookish for my taste.

The sisters on Charmed acted like sisters. That's one of the things I loved about it. That can really make a difference in a show. How siblings interact. Of course the head writer for the show is the middle sister of 3 so that helps. I watched the first few and I agree it did seem a bit over the top but then I saw a couple from last season that seemed better. I have a few friends that love to watch it and I've heard it's gotten a lot better since the first season. So I'm willing to give it a try.

I LOVE these shows! I TiVo all my shows and watch at night when the kids go to bed. I watch MEDIUM, GHOST WHISPERER, MOST HAUNTED, A HAUNTING, THE DRESDEN FILES, etc. I used to watch CHARMED, BUFFY, and ANGEL, but I watched every one of those at least twice so I don't watch them anymore. I still love to watch TWILIGHT ZONE, BEWITCHED, and THE MUNSTERS. I LOVE shows like this. I have heard about SUPERNATURAL, but haven't watched it yet. I think I will find it and TiVo it and start watching. :)

I love these shows! I love Buffy because it showed women are strong and can save the world too. Angel was the spin off and was totally awesome...but also had a strong female character that played her part in saving the world one person at a time. Supernatural...I love because it shows the world that we don't see and only read about. Charmed...another show that was able to display the positive side to witchcraft. But I have recently started watching the Dresden Files. Which has a male for the lead but it also shows how one with knowledge and talent on the world we read as folklore is able to help people when they discover it is more than just a story. I love these shows because I believe there is more than we know. Oh! I also love the Ghost Hunters because they will debunk what is not real and leave what they can not debunk for us to decide if it is real. It shows there is more out there that we do not know and are trying to learn more about.

I do agree they can make you wonder about what might be out there that we don't know about. Especially when in the story things aren't common knowledge for the rest of society and they always have to break it to new people to save. I have watched Supernatural but it's against CSI which makes it hard. I really need to see if I can catch up on it. I started watching the Dresden Files as well. That's been very good. I heard it's based off a book series so I'm goign to have to try and find those as well.

I love those types of shows, I always have. I was a fan of Buffy, back in the day, before I felt the show got bizarre. Once Joss Whedon jumped ship. Never could get into Angel. I don't know quite if they count, but I loved Highlander and Harsh Realm - Harsh Realm suffered the famed Fox Axe. :/ I have it on DVD. And of course, my favorite, Kingdom Hospital. Stephen King's greatest masterpiece, if you ask me. I used to be hooked on Tales From The Dark Side when I was younger. And I love the modern Outer Limits. Though almost every episode deals with either aliens or robots, I've noticed. Not quite so much the mysitc.

I enjoyed the first Highlander movie, but that's about it as far as movies go. Though I am eagerly awaiting the anime film set to be released later this year. The art and direction team are one of my favorites - the same team that did Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, one of the first animes to be released in mainstream theaters in America - so I'm eager to see what they do with the storyline. Harsh Realm is about a military virtual reality training simulation gone wrong. It's been taken over by a rogue general who's turned it into his own utopia, and soldiers are hooked into this world, told that it's still a simulation, and given orders to take out the dictator. But it isn't easy as all that. And Kingdom Hospital is just amazing - rent it, if you get a chance. How could I forget Forever Knight? That was a good one, too. And Strange Luck! I loved that one, too. Never did catch Werewolf.

Of course Highlander counts :) That was a great show and I liked some of the movies. I never saw the cartoon though they made of it. Immortals aren't exactly in the realm of normal so I'd say they count. I never saw Harsh Realm nor did I see Kingdom Hospital. I heard that Kingdom Hospital was very good I just missed it at the time. Did you ever watch Werewolf? That was a very good show. So was Forever Knight, the story of a vampire turned cop who was trying to make up for all the evil he had done in the world. I have the premiere movie with Rick Springfield in the role on DVD. It was a good series.

I can't believe I forgot Highlander in my post. I loved Highlander. The summer after senior year of high school it came on about five times a day on different channels, and sometimes I would watch every single one of those episodes. Yeah, I know, that's pretty lame. But I love the show!

The History Channel can have some great ones on Hauntings and believe it or not so can the Travel Channel. I've seen them do specials on hotels that are haunted.

I like to watch Ghost Whisperer because I like the characters in the show and the storyline, plus it's fascinating to think of being able to communicate with those who've passed on. The same with Medium, I like the story and characters but I'm also very into psychic phenomemon and feel that we all have psychic abilities to some degree. The Twilight Zone was awesome, I love to watch it when it's on late night on Sci Fi channel and I used to watch it as a kid too. The neat thing about a lot of Rod Serling's stories was that they typically had an important lesson within them.

I'm into the psychic phenomemon as well and enjoy stories that deal with it. Yeah Twilight Zone did usually have a lesson to be learned within it's story which is always good. I like ones that do that because often you don't realize the message until later and it makes you think more.

Yes, I watch Heroes. I love that show. I wish I had Mika's abilities. He is a techno-kinetic, he can manipulate machines. I like that. Frankly, I love all of the characters on that show. I used to watch Angel, but I had to stop watching when I went to college and got a job. I love those kinds of ahows.

My youngest daughter and I love Ghost Whisperer. It's our Friday night ritual now to sit together and watch the show. It can be such a tear-jerker at times, which I think actually aids in stress relief. It's a fun show and a definite escape . My older two used to love Buffy The Vampire Slayer, another fun show with a strong female lead character. I appreciated that when my daughters were younger. In fact Sarah Michelle Geller was in part responsible for my daughter taking Tae Kwon Do. Cheers!

I've always loved shows like this, starting with Tales From The Darkside when I was a wee bairn, lol. The X-Files will always have a special place in my heart, and I still maintain an XF fanfic archive and website. I loved Millenium and Harsh Realm, American Gothic was amazing, loved Brimstone, Buffy and Angel, Carnivale, Tru Calling, and now Supernatural is a big favorite, my wife is majorly obsessed. I never got into Charmed by my almost ten year old daughter likes it a lot. I really believe shows of this nature will always have an appeal. No matter how much we claim to be skeptics, I think there's something primordial inside of us that believe there's more to this 'verse than meets the eye.

I agree I think they will always do good although right now I think they are doing better then they have in the past. Now they can be more serious about it where as in the past it was often in comedy format only.

I've been reading science fiction and fantasy books since I learned to read, so I guess it's only natural that I am also drawn to those kinds of TV shows. The basis of science fiction and fantasy is What If -- what if unicorns and dragons really existed, what if we could travel through time, what if aliens were really visiting earth, what if one could live forever. Ask yourself some what if questions and then see if you can match them up to your favorite shows. Guess I'm just a What If kinda person.

Oh I agree with you there. I think it's the what if factor that draws us to them. I know it is for me as well. What if we could do that? It would make life far more interesting that is for sure.

I love shows like this. Particularly Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is probably my favorite television show of all time. I think I like these shows because it's easier for me to suspend disbelief while watching them. If a show looks like it's supposed to be "realistic", then I'll catch myself picking things apart every time something happens that isn't realistic. With shows that are "not normal" you can just move yourself right on into the world of the show, and not worry about it. Another thing I love about shows like this is that they rarely seem to take themselves too seriously. They're a little bit tounge-in-cheek, quick to make fun of themselves, and even at their darkest, usually have bits of humor mixed in. Also, in shows where the whole premise is "unreal", it's easy to deal with issues without seeming preachy. You see the story first, but afterwards you can see morals in it, instead of the story being an excuse to present the moral. Oh, and I think Alyson Hannigan is just delicious. Is that a good excuse for liking Buffy the Vampire Slayer? *laughs*

I love Buffy. That is a great show. I think it's a good excuse to watch it for Alyson Hannigon. There's a few characters on there that I think are drool worthy ;) You are right when they aren't normal you don't have to watch it thinking wait that isn't right. How can they do that type thing? Where as I watch some of these others that are supposed to be realistic and really aren't; which really turns me off a show quicker then anything. Now the others where things are a bit unusual or strange you can just enjoy it and go ok yeah the parent is going to buy that story with no problem or what have you.

I really enjoy all these kinds of shows. I don't have any deep belief in the supernatural but I enjoy it as a theme and I guess I have some inner fascination with it, like I wish it all were true. I loved the Buffy series when it was in its prime, the storylines were so very dark and with such clever humor. I've never heard of the Ghost Whisperer where I live now but I think I'd like to get a hold of it.

Yeah I loved Buffy as well, both the movie and the TV Show. They did a good job of mixing that humor in there. Ghost Whisperer deals with a woman who can see ghosts and has to help them. Of the ones I've seen they have been very good just at a bad time for me. If it comes in your area you should check it out.

I dont know why, but I love Supernatural. I wont look and change channels if its bloody or gross or something else. But the show just got me. I like to be freaked out which is why each week I enjoy being so. It helps the two guys on there are really cute both Dean & Sam are hot! ;) I also love Heroes even more so. Its the greatest show about people with powers. You didnt name it but its up there with none normal shows. I like them cause its better to not be in reality and believe things like have powers exist or just getting freaked out too.

I watch shows, because they are entertaining, I find so much of it to be fictional, though I do think that the paranormal exists, that there is more to what we know and see. But just as I don't think that everyone in the Leave it to Beaver generation lived a life like that, I don't think those who have talents live lives like you see on Dark Shadows, Bewitched, Charmed, or Medium. They are entertaining, different, some are dumb and boring, so I don't watch all. Like any other genre of tv show, some are bad, even tacky and some are fun. I enjoyed Dark Shadows, it had a great mystery to it, you wanted to know what was going on, granted I watched it when it was in reruns on Scifi channel though I believe it was listed as a soap opera at one time. I liked Charmed because the stories were good, there was a sense of humor, sometimes it was silly, and occasionally seemed to poke fun at itself. I like Heros which is on now, the characters are great they are written well enough that you want to know what happens to them, just enough tidbits are given leaving you wanting to see the next show, know the next event. I could say the same for a show like Jericho which has no paranormal in but does the same thing, leaves you wanting to know what is going on. It seems to me that shows that have those themes often have a somewhat hero complex, shows like Eureka, etc they show people who are different than average, and people want to be taken out side of themselves for a while, wonder at the what if I could... I suppose those shows are so popular for the same reason comic books have been so popular. There was a time when the comic book industry was about detective, mystery stories and Archie and Jughead. Then came Superman, and other such heros. All have abilities outside of above, extra, than normal or average. How many I wonder if they had paranormal or extra skills would use their talents to benefit others, or themselves?

I love shows that deal with the paranormal. My favorite modern supernatural show would have to be supernatural.the chemistry between the actors is phenomenal. The episodes are so original and downrights scary. My favorite classic paranormal show is Twilight Zone.I love it so much because each episode dealt with different characters and there was always a subtle message involved.
