Its really an old wives tale kept alive thru the passing of time. Below is a poem sent to me with one explaination, but I've heard of others. Can you quote any? Thumb represents parents Second finger represents brothers & sisters Center finger represents own self Fourth finger represents your partner Last finger represents your children

I have never heard this before. That is intersting. You always have such information packed discussions. Thanks for that. I never had an engagement ring. We thought it would be best to use that money to help with our home that we would be needing.

the engangement ring is to be worn in the fourth finger because the fourth finger of the left hand containsthe vena amoris or "vein of love". In Western tradition, an engagement ring is a ring worn by a woman on her left-hand ring finger indicating her engagement to be married. By modern convention, the ring is usually presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective bride while or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to future marriage.

I actually never knew why the fourth finger, I just knew that the left hand was because it was 'closer to the heart.' I did a quick search and found this fascinating site with ALOT of history about many of the traditions involving the ring! Apparently at one point it was wished that a ring could be formed around the heart, which of course was impossible...fascinatiing reading! Here is the site should you want to read more: http://www.seiyaku.com/customs/rings.html

I've heard that there's a blood vessel in that finger that runs straight through your arm to the heart, but I don't think it's actually true.
