Singapore is commonly populated by the Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian and other ethnic group. This weekend, the Chinese are celebrating their New Year or the First Day of Spring according to the calculation of Chinese Calendar. It will be the Year of Boar as in the Chinese almanac. It will be a long weekend holiday here. Schools, govt offices, pte offices, factories and some shops will only open on wed 21 feb. During this festival of the Chinese New Year (CNY) the chinese will have a reunion dinner on the eve of CNY that is on 17 feb. Lots of food are being serve, but the common one is Steamboat. It is a dish where every possible seafood like fish, cuttlefish ball and vegetable being dump in a boat like utensils and boil to cook. Mandarin oranges can be find everywhere as the Chinese believe that it is a good items to eat during this CNY. They also will give an "ang pow" or red packet containing money to those unmarried person for good luck. There will be a lot of cultural activities like lion dance and other being held during the first 15 days of the CNY. So if you haven't experience it, do come to Singapore and enjoy it.
