Smoke Alarm, Do you have one in your home?

I changed the batteries in my smoke alarms today. We have two in the house one upstairs and one down. Did you know, You're twice as likely to die in a fire at home if you haven't got a smoke alarm. A smoke alarm is the easiest way to alert you to the danger of fire, giving you precious time to escape. It's cheap, easy to get hold of and easy to fit. There's no excuse for not having one. Do you have one in your house? http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/downloads/pyfff/smkalarm.html

I have one in my hallway -almost the center of the home and a carbon monoxide detector in the kitchen as I only have gas in the kitchen and lounge.

We also have two in our house. One in the hallway and one on the landing upstairs. They are very sensitive and if I don't clean the crumbs out of the toaster they start to smoke and the alarms go off. Everybody in the neighbourhood must know when we are having breakfast, as they also set the house alarm off.

Chriss, I am twice as likely to quit cooking/baking if I leave my smoke alarm hooked up! Every time I even try to bake or cook the blamed thing goes off! It is just so super sensitive that I've had to disconnect it. It is worrisome not having it; but I don't know what else to do. I will listen to any other suggestions. I already run my exhaust fan while cooking/baking, and my burners/oven are all clean. ~Donna

I too had one in the hall by the kitchen but had to move it because when cooking the fumes would set it off so i just moved it away from the kitchen, Where you place smoke detectors depends on the size and layout of your home, and where people sleep in your home. Since the primary job of a smoke detector is to awaken sleeping persons and warn them of urgent danger, put your detector as close as possible to the bedrooms or other places where people frequently sleep. If two sleeping areas are separated, each should have its own detector. The hallway next to the bedrooms or other sleeping areas should be a priority location for detectors. hope that helps.

I have two .. and I don't have batteries in either of them .. you see I eat toast at least once a day .. and everytime I make toast the smoke alarms go off .. my toast is only golden brown .. not a hint of 'burnt' toast anywhere and in fact the alarms go off about half way through the toasting sequence .. Flippin' alarms are far too sensitive .. this is the THIRD different brand I've tried and they all go off half way through the toasting .. The only way to stop them once they are set off is to pull the battery out .. but I cannot reach the alarms where they are on the ceiling .. not without a set of steps and with my dodgy hips I'd be likely to flippin' fall off them ... Why oh why won't the manufacturers put an on/off switch on the alarms .. everyone I have spoken to said it would be the ideal solution .. and on/off switch that is a timer .. shuts off for 10-15 minutes and then switches on again .. perfect for making toast .. Now if my alarms had that kind of on/off switch I would get the batteries back in asap .. I know it's crazy not to have the batteries in .. but if they are going to go off just because I made a piece of toast what can I do ??

Yes, we have one and we always check the batteries. My husband lost his two year old sister to a house fire. So this is something that we always make sure to have and that it is working. Better to be safe than sorry is the way I feel.

I used to have smoke alarm that you put batteries in but now I have it included in my home alarm system. Which doesn't have batteries and if the smoke detector goes of it sounds an alarm but also calls the fire department but they will call you first in case it is just from burnt toast (LOL) but if you don't answer the phone they know it is serious.

We have 5 smoke alarms in our house. One each in two of the bedrooms, one in the hallway, and one each in the family room and lounge room. Smoke Detectors are essential. But having them working is very important. Batteries must be updated. Location is important too. Heat rises, so have it on the ceiling.

We have smoke alarms hardwired into the walls of our apartments. It is important to also replace the batteries in the units. The maintenance workers always change the batteries in ours.

We are not that financially capable of getting a smoke alarm for our home... so I guess I just have to be double careful...

yep 2 smoke Alarms, Wow Really your more likely to die without one. Please pray for the people that don't have one because they can't afford one. think the govt should start giving them to new homeowners for free. and provide some free batteries to keep people alive. but don't leave the stove on overnight and i'm sure you'll be fine. take care Jon

We have 5 detectors in our house. However, I am ashamed to admit that at the moment not a single one of them boasts working batteries.....

I have more than one smoke alarm and also do check the batteries. Sometimes when I get a chance to sleep, I need the alarms to wake me up in time to save my children. I believe everyone should have them in their home.

We have one, but we never have had it hooked up. it still sits in the little box that it came in some 10 years ago. i know we should have it installed, but no one ever got around to it. and i agree there is no excuse. perhaps in the new house we are getting, we will actually put a fire alarm in right away.

I do have a smoke alarm (two of them) and I change the batteries when the time changes in the spring and the fall. I have survived a housefire (when I was only 10 ) and it makes me very nervous so I take every precaution I can to prevent this happening in my home. The smoke alarm never went off in the fire I was in and I'm not exactly sure why as the silly thing use to go off everytime we burnt toast, lol.

Yes, they are very important. You should have one on every floor of your home. A carbon monoxide detector is good too.

Yes, theres a smoke alarm at the place where I live. Whenever I burn my toasts, the alarm start immediately. So I guess it's a good one and that I am safe in case of fire. We should all have a smoke alarm in our home.

Of course we have smoke alarms in our home. We also have carbon monoxide detectors. I just had a good friend of ours lose their home during the holiday season because of Christmas lights. Fortunately they made it out of their home on time and did not get injured, but in fact they did lose all of their things in the fire. You must always put your family's safety first.
