I have a recipe for "french breakfast muffins" that is very simple, butter, sugar, flour, baking powder... and nutmeg. Which I am out of. Can I substitute allspice? It's a 1/4 teaspoon for the entire recipe.

Yes. You can use allspice or cloves or ginger or even cinnamon. It won't really affect the flavor that much and it may turn out that you like it better with the different spice. I have even used apple pie spice and pumpkin pie spice in place of nutmeg in recipes. Just pick your fave and use that.

Thanks, I appreciate the comment! We'll try it with the allspice this time. Even if the flavor is different, to my 8 and 10 year olds, a muffin is a muffin, lol. I'm sure they'll be eaten no matter what.

I don't see why you couldn't.Even so in allspice gloves are the more predominant spice.....I think it should work flavor wise. There really is no repalcement for nutmeg....at least not that I know of.Try it with allspice this time and next time with nutmeg.....than you can decide which you like better.Good luck!!

thanks! It's a new recipe, and it sounds so good I don't want to mess it up the first time we make them.
