Do you eat ORGANIC FOOD?

United States
February 19, 2007 10:25pm CST
Here in the U.S. testing on food is not regulated the way it is in other parts of the world, such as in France, for example (they are not allowed to even sell such drinks as Red Bull). Here, we could end up eating foods, that have chemicals that have yet to be completely tested, and most of it does not have to be disclosed on food (yet). So, I was wondering if anyone here is worried about the chemicals that are being used these days. And, if any of you eat organic food. Or, if you trust the government to keep us safe. I have always been concerned with what I eat. And, after realizing (and studying) what has been happening, I have started eating more and more food that is organically grown (even though it might not be the best, in my opinion, it is safer for now).

My husband loves organic food. He actually prefers over other times of foods, because he believes it's healthier due to the fact that it's more natural. We also feed my daughter organic foods. I think it helps her digest things easier as well. For example, my husband eats a lot of organic fruits and veggies because he doesn't like all the chemicals they place in regular fruits and veggies. And even though it costs more, I think it's worth it, because it's much more healthier.

That is good that you are trying to get your daughter to grow up eating healthy, real, food. Most kids these days start eating junk food, before they can walk, and drinking soda before they can talk. I have seen this happen, and it is very frustrating, because they are innocent, and do not know better. It is the parents and society as a whole, that really needs to change.

Well to be honest, I never had organic foods, Wouldn't mind trying them. As to the chemicals in the food, yes I worry alot, I been hearing more and more about the food these days and it's plan scary. I try not to think about it, but can't help it.. Maybe I should try organic food, I'm picky but as long as it's not a aquired taste type food, I'd probably enjoy it.. Thank you for the insight ms Valley girl :)

You're Welcome, I actually like going to the organic stores, now, because they are not as busy and they look very old-fashioned, unlike the busy supermarkets. Also, don't worry about a different taste. As long as you start slow, with veggies, fruits, breads, and small things like that, you will switch over fast. I really recommend Trader Joe's, there is always something delicious there. I love their Super Nutty Toffee Clusters ceral, it is yummy.

Come on now... we are made of chemicals... It is good to see what we are eating.. we should limit that up to that level... If you start eating only organic foods, what do you want to eat... What do you get all the time that is only organic...

I buy bread, cereal, fruits, veggies, all sorts of things, that are made more naturally, instead of being saturated with corn syrup and things we can't even identify. For people that wanted to lose weight, a trip to an organic store, would get you on the right track fast.

Every chance I get I choose organic or local grown. I raise all I can and hope to market garden sometime in the next few years. Must get my life back on track first. It is better and can be of as good or better quality of you find a farm near you that is intent on bringing the best. If you are out west it can be easier to find as well on the east coast. The movement is growing and I hope will eventually take over the market. Whole foods store is a good bet for finding the most items for selection of local and organic grown. Good luck it is well worth it.

Yes, I think so too. In our area, there is an organic market, called Sprouts, so I like that. And Trader Joe's. There are foods there, that just seem fresher, and cleaner. Good luck with you future enterprise, after all that you have overcome, I am sure that you will be able to do it.

I didn't know there may be chemicals in our food. I wouldn't mind buying organic food. I like a lot of food that is healthy which is good. So eating organic would be a good idea. It's still the same healthy food I eat but safer. But my dad does all the grocery shopping and he doesn't care if its organic or not so I don't have that much control over the food that comes into the house. But whenever I do buy things, I'll start trying out organic from now on. Thanks.

Your welcome. And, I did not have much control either, when I lived at home, but now, I am responsible for almost everything we eat, unless my hubby has an opinion. And, he is the one that has gotten more and more into organic foods.

If it is legit, and been inspected, not paid off, then organic is far more healthier. You can also taste the difference.

Hi Westernvalleygirl, Nice to visit with you again. And, especially in regard to such an important topic. You're absolutely right. The chemicals used in commercial farming today are not good for us. They are very taxing on our immune systems. So, you ask if we eat organic. Yes, as much as possible. We grow most of our veggies as well as peaches, apples, and different types of berries. I only grow organic. No chemicals ... period. We make our own composted soil amendments, using cedar shred to help manage insects. We also use predatory biological controls for more tenacious bugs, and diotomaceous earth for grubs, and grasshoppers. The end result, organic food is just a whole lot better -- taste as well as the net result on our bodies. As far as buying organic ... there are certain fruits & veggies that require more insect control when grown. Others less. For example: commercially grown green peppers and apples are sprayed -- alot! When I buy those types of foods, I always buy organic. I also give preference to local organic growers. Just gotta' love the local Farmer's Market. Thanks for bringing up this important topic.

Good morning Westernvalleygirl, Have you tried Succanat, Stevia, or Beet Sugar as alternative sweeteners? Each are great alternatives to refined, prosessed cane sugar. I especially like Stevia because it's easy to grow in the garden. Of course, I'm forever finding the dogs nibbling on the Stevia leaves, so growing it means more work shooing the critters away. Iced tea with fresh Stevia leaves is wonderful! As well, the leaves are a great addition to both green & fruit salads.

Well I don't really eat much organic, although I buy organic for my boys. I don't know why I don't eat it myself, I get it for them because I know it's healthier, and I feel it's better for them than all the chemicals in everything else. We don't really buy organic vegtables as it's quite more expensive, most of the organic stuff I buy for the kids is pre-prepared snacks, raisins etc.

I have gone through "phases" of trying to eat organic food. It can be difficult to purchase, and one has to travel more distance. Many years ago I tried buying only organic. I used to have to drive at least 30 minutes each way to purchase it. Although I am really organic now, I still make an effort to buy food with no preservative and added chemicals. This is much better for my husbands diet. Organic food would be better for us, I am sure of it, as our bodies are designed to process only natural foods.

Yes, that is true. We do have to pay more for it also, and it is, out of our way, to get it most of the times also. I do not eat as much organic food as I would like, but I have to say, it is the majority of the food that me and my hubby eat.

I really don't eat organically grown food. I've noticed that a lot of the recalls are on organic food. I don't really care about the pesticides to tell you the truth as of yet. I have to say though that I really haven't looked into it very much.

A good stroll through and organic store, or a trader joe's is always nice, it shows you how many things you can get, that are fresher, cleaner, and better tasting than regular food. You just might like it.

My Mother ran a organic food business from home as a child I ate nothing but organic fruit vegetable bio dynamic yoghurts cheese etc. As well as being healthy for me it also taught me alot about the food industry and food itself anyone who has tried good quality organic food will tell you the taste is so much different to usual store bought sprayed by chemicals food in supermarkets in the end the best food is food you grow yourself but in my opnin organically grown is the next best thing

Exactly, I wish I could grow the things that I needed, but that is just so difficult to do. I am thinking of starting an herb garden and getting perhaps, some lemon trees in there also. So, at least I will have those.

I try to. But unfortunately organic food is more expensive so there are times wherein I cannot afford it.
