Would you feel safe in a car that 'drives itself'?

I was just reading a report that said that cars that 'drive themselves' may well be available and even be commonplace within the next 20 years. US researchers have said that vehicles equipped with GPS positioning and artifical intelligence will be safer than cars driven by humans. (I can understand that, lol - but what if your car's computer malfunctions?) Would you like to own a car that drives itself? Would you feel safer in one?

I wont be... I have my doubts about that... Even the most experienced drivers will do mistakes and will not be able to take a decision sometimes while driving... How can we depend on a machine to take decisions... I think upto parallel parking is fine ...

i don't think i'd feel safe in a car that frives itself. i don't even feel safe in the passenger seat with friends or family driving. i'm paranoid in a car unless i'm driving. i think it's a lack of control thing. i guess if i want to crash i want it to be at my own fault and not anyone else's.

MsWOLF, no no and no...I want to be control of my vehicle. I don't like the imaginary brake either...lol... I knew something like this would be happening down the line..I feel the same way you feel what if it malfunctions then what? That alone scares me. I would NOT like to own a vehicle that drives itself at all...I'm safer in my own vehicle that I drive :) This topic scares me..lol

It would take a lot of convincing on this one. They have been talking about this technology for a long time but now it seems they may have a viable option. Two problems I see with it. First....as you have said.....what if the computer malfunctions. Of course we all know that can never happen...never happen....never happen....right? Second what about all those other drivers out there that have not switched to it. Regardless of the safety measures they take about who is in front and who is in back there will always be someone who pulls out in front of you or crosses the center line. The only way I see this working is if everyone has it and like aircraft piloted by computers it has multiple backups. But it sounds intriguing.

I'd like one of those ones I've seen on television that parallel parks, only because I really suck at that, I nearly flunked my driving test because of that. I also have to drive around a lot in cities to find a spot that I know I can pull out of without hitting someone, or I park and pay a lot of money in a parking garage. I don't think I would want one that drives itself, maybe because I recently watched the movie "Stealth" lol. I know it's a far stretch that cars would get a mind of their own and kill us all, but who knows?

This idea creeps me out. A car is just too big a piece of machinery to have it controlling itself. Every computer breaks down at some point. Could you imagine it happening while driving 65-70 down a busy expressway?? No, No, we humans should drive be driving ourselves.

I would love to have a car that drives itself but would also like for it to still have the option for a person to drive it, just in case the computer malfunctions. If these cars do happen, there is no doubt in my mind that they will still have an option for someone to drive it as many people still love to drive. It would definitely work for me since I get pretty tired after work and would love to be driven home. :-)

No I would not Shywolf as I like to be in control of the Driving. I am not a very good Passenger at all, so I could not see myself in a Car that was driving itself. Just the thought of it puts fear up me lol.

Honestly, no, I would not feel safe in a car that drove itself. I don't feel safe half the time when my partner is driving for that matter!! LOL I have explained to my partner that my life is in his hands when he has the wheel in his hands. He has the control of the car. Yes, other drivers have as much effect also because some very safe drivers get hit because some looney appeared out of nowhere. But essentially, the buggy on four wheels that I am riding in is being controlled by someone else other than me. So, that lack of control makes me feel uneasy at times. Now if the car drove itself...hold on buddy!!! LOL What if the calibrations are off? What if there is something in the road that is not supposed to be there...ie. half a blown semi tire. How would the car know to go around that? What about entering a highway where others are merging onto the entrance to the highway you just got off at the same time? They is nerve racking as it is!!! And a computer is supposed to know where all the other cars are supposed to be? I am not confident in a car driving by itself and not wrecking. But, I suppose it is possible. Maybe on day with I have grown very old with wrinkles from head to butt, it will be possible for me to sit in my car and name the grocery store I want to go to...but until then, I rather push the gas and brake myself. :) Cool discussion! :) I'll try to remember this one when I am 90 yrs old. :)

I like the cars that parallel park by themselves because I really can't do that unless there are two empty spaces next to each other and I can drive forward into the spot. No backing into parallel parking for me. Forget it! I've done enough damage to my vehicle in parking lots alone! We have auto pilot in vehicles but I don't like using that. I think it is important for the driver to be in control.

I definitely wouldn't feel safe in one of those cars. Like you say, what if the system broke down and I was asleep in the car. Also can they stop another car from hitting them? I would want a lot of answers before I would ever consider getting into one of those cars.

I would feel safer. I have more confidence in technology than I do in some of the drivers I see on the roads. The auto cars are less likely to fall asleep, or be drunk behind the wheel. I can't wait. I'll make the commute to work a lot easier than it is now.

Would I feel safe?-I don't think so and I don't think I should. As you have mentioned, what if the car's computer malfunctions? I would still prefer a human driver rather than this car with artificial intelligence.

In the higher end cars, like mercedes, BMW, ect. Your not truely driving the car anyways. It's called drive by wire, you turn the steering wheel to make the car turn, but the steering well isn't actually mechically connected to turn the wheels. Same with the gas pedal, which is much more common. That being said, someone is much more likely to not paying attention and causing an accident vs a computer breaking and causing you to wreck.

Definitely I would not feel safe in a car what is not in my control or in other human's hand. For me and my family I would never buy a car which "drives itself". We have to admit taht compare to some crazy driver may be that would be a good option. But if there is an option between me or my husband and the "drives itself" car, I would never choose that special car.

h e double hockey sticks naw. I understand that cars are now capable of detecting objects which may pose a safety hazzard. But what if this feature malfunctions? what if there is a small child running so fast that the car cannot pinpoint location of the child, or even someones pet? What a bout stopping on a dime? Will the impact be more bonecrushing than a normal accident. Let me go all out with this one. What if the car was tooo smart and refuses to go anywhere from simple debris detected as a safety issue. What if the car catches a virus when cold wheather hits? If I saw a vehicle like this, I would ask these questions, no matter how ig'nant they may be.

i don't sese myself riding a car driving itself soon. it could be safe but like what you said what if its AI malfucntions?.. well humans also malfunction when they are drunk but i don't drink and drive. i thinks its safer with human driving it unless it like a train that has its own tracks and does not need complex computing to drive itself

I would trust it since machines are just as reliable as humans. The number of times a computer has failed me : 2 times. The number of times a human has failed me:countless.

In today's technology and I believe you said, 20 years, I guess if all the cars have this system installed in them and that they do work intelligently, just like the train systems, well I can say that I wouldn't buy this type of cars. Why would you own a car if you can't even drive it? The GPS and artificial intelligence sounds great but what if you're in an emergency and you need to rush to that place? The car's computer would say that you should slow down and then it decelerates your speed, causing you to throw an angry fit at the machine. Technology is made to help us improve our lives, not to make us as lazy as a couch potato.

I would never feel safe in a car that i can not control. The outside world is unpredictable and the car can not know what can or will happen. As you stated the car can malfunction. Anything mechanical can brake down at any point of time.
