Homelessness in America

When a homeless person asks you for money do you give it (if you have money to spare) or do you ignore the homeless person. There are so many homeless people in the USA that it breaks my heart to see them. The USA is a wealthy nation but it appears to me that the government in the USA does not care about the homeless. Please give me your opinion about the homeless in the world as I would like to write an article about homeless people.

I think people don't realize how easy it is to become homeless. If an emergency comes up and causes you to use all of your savings and you are living from paycheck to paycheck, there are many different things that can happen to cause you to fall behind on your bills and never be able to catch up. It is a very scary thought but it does happen every day. I have helped many homeless people either giving them money or buying a hot meal for them to eat. It is very sad and I wish my city would do more for the homeless.

Yes it is very easy to become homeless as you indicated. People don't realize that one incident can have them in the streets homeless and without friends and relatives to help. Thank you for your wise response.

I have always tried to help. I would not give cash, but I have given food. There was a man standing in front of a store, asking for money. I told him I didn't have much, but I had most of my lunch left over. He was very happy to take it, he had eaten almost every bit by the time I pulled out of the parking lot. I have invited a 19 year old pregnant woman to live in my home, her husband was killed in a drive by shooting. She had no where to go and her mother would not take her in. I tried to get her help through Social Services, but they insisted that they have my husbands income. I did not know this girl, but I did not want her on the street. The child did not even have a pair of shoes that fit her. She stayed with me until after the baby was born, she got a job and got on her feet. She is doing fine now. There was a documentary that came on tv about a homeless man. Someone gave him $100,000. They wanted to see what would happen. He started out with good intentions, but he went through the money really quick and was soon homeless again. It is nearly impossible for someone to get a job without an address. It is impossible for someone to get an address without a job. It is a vicious cycle. The really bad part is, even Social Services will not give you any help without an address, but when you give them one, they want to know all the income coming into the household. So, you can't help someone. We have always paid a lot in state taxes, but I often wonder, if we were ever in a bad situation, would the state turn us away too? It scares me to think about it.

You are right, many homeless people are disabled and they qualify for assistance but if they do not have an address they don't get assistance. It is a catch 22 as you indicated when you tried to get that young woman some help. Before a person can get assistance Social Services wants information on everyone in the household even if they are not related. Thank you for sharing your personal experience with a homeless girl.

It is always good to help those in 'real' need, especially those who are unable to earn enough to make ends meet or really have problems finding a roof above them.

Thank you for your response, homelessness is a world wide problem but my point is that USA is a very rich nation and it has the means to build more shelters than we have at present. What does the Government in India do for the homeless? What do other Governments do for the homeless?
