If you are a chronic sufferer of acid reflux please seek treatment. Long term abuse of the esophagus by stomach acids will alter the cells and create esophageal cancer. Since this cancer is generally not detected until symptoms are severe (i.e inability to swallow) the prognosis is generally a death sentence. The surgery involves removal of a rib, removal of the esophagus or a least a good portion of it, the stretching of the stomach up to the place where the esophagus was, being on pumped food into your intestine for some time after surgery and a life of having to sleep upright. As with any ailment, if you suffer frequent and chronic heartburn - see your physician for remedy before it is too late.

I am with you there, I am also an asthmatic...seems there are an awful lot of us anymore. I did not know that it increased the GERD incidence. My father has had GERD for many many years mostly untreated, and now has the Esophageal Cancer - hence my warning.
