I know a lot about some kinds of music, but there are a whole bunch of different genres I'm not familiar with. Can someone please tell me what emo music, punk rock music, and grunge music is? Obviously, I've heard some songs from those categories, but how do I classify songs and bands and singers? What makes them punk, emo, grunge, or even alternative?

All I know are punk, emo and alternative music but I never heard of grunge before. Punk musics are closely related to emo music but they vary in some way or another. Punk bands includes Greenday, Blink 182 and Boxcar Racer. Emo bands includes My Chemical Romance, Dashboard Confessionals and The Used. Alternative music are those music played by Creed, The Used, 3 Doors Down and Hoobastank. There are lots of genres out there that even I never knew about it like ska, rave and rap metal.

Punk rock is a fast playing heavy metal music. I believe it started in England in the late 70's. The Clash is a good example.Grunge is heavy metal music that has a distinct beat. It is like punk but slower. It came around in the 90's .It was from Seattle. Nirvana is a good example.Alternative rock is a softer rock that has a pop-like sound. Creed is a good example.

And to me 3 doors down or creed isn't that alternative. Try these: Pajo, the shins, zero 7. The thing about emo is correct, more of those guys who like to dress themselves in the kind of thing they sing about, black and stuff, emotional lyrics but mostly not that great to me.

Punk is classified by it's anti-authority, pro-awareness message and is low-budget because of the anti-major label attitude. It includes bands such as the Misfits, Bad Brains, and Bad Religion. Grunge was a rebirth of punk in the 90s as a backlash to the heavy metal scene. It includes bands such as Nirvana and Alice in Chains. Emo is short for emotive hardcore (although in recent years has been misconstrued to any band that shows emotion). It includes bands such as Rites of Spring, Embrace, and One Last Wish. Hopefully this set the record straight.
