I was talking to one of my friends the other day, her son and my 12 year old have started going roller skating together. We started talking about how wonderful when we were that age that the roller skating rink was. I also use to love watching the Saturday night Roller derby's with my Mother. She and I had so much fun watching those big bad women. I even kinda fancied my self Jim Croce's bleach blond bomber of his song Roller Derby Queen. Its been years since I have thought about the roller derby and how much fun we had there for a time. What kind of memories do you have of activities as a preteen and adolescent. Do any of you remember the roller derby's?

I sure do remember the roller derby. Those women used to scare the bejesus out of me. I used to love going to the skating rink and watching all the skating newbies trying to skate. I used to some real good laughs over that, lol.I always forgot I was like that when i first started going!lol

LMAO Yes they sure were mean. I wanted to be tough just like them too. Funny thing is I realized that being tough was not what the boys found attractive as I got a little older. Yep lots of laughs, but on the other hand I helped some newbies learn, so I think that makes up for some of the giggles. When I was an older teen and disco was the rage, oh my gosh the rink was then my stage. It's just too funny.

I remember the Roller Derby, those shows were more entertaining then the pro wrestling that's such a big hit today. There was even a movie made about it that is somewhat recent (starring L.L.Cool J). I only caught the tail end of the phenom, for the most part it was before my time. I still love to rollerblade along the beach of Lake Michigan though. I went to a roller skating party for my buddy's kid's birthday a couple months back. I don't know why, but I struggled on those things. I can roller blade rather well, but can't roller skate worth a darn. Isn't that an oxymoron or something?

Now see I was the exact opposite, I could roller skate and ice skate but I could not stay up on a pair of roller blades for nothing in this world.

RollerSkates - Vintaged Roller Skates
Well, in my neighborhood roller skating was a big thing, and back then we had the heavy metal skates that you attached to your shoes, gosh I had forgotten all about those. But anyway on Saturday evenings after the cleaning, laundry and shopping was done mom, my brother and me would watch the Sat. nite specials on TV,at one point in time it was the roller derby or wrestling and then the Sat. nite horror while we ate the Sat. nite snacks...really miss that stuff...nice post, thanks...SS

Yes those were the type of skates I learned to skate on although I was very young like 6 7. When I was a preteen and finally got to lace up high legged white shoes with wheels I was so excited, had joined the big leagues. Oh my gosh those wonderful horror movies Dr Phibes, the creature from the black lagoon. My mom was way cool about things like that too. I hated wrestling and still do.

God, I used to have that Croce album before we moved here and it was lostin the Big Purge. I well remember being taken down every Saturday to rollerskate and playing red light green light, shoot the duck, and all the rest. It was such a '70's staple.

have such faulous memories of doing that, although I wold have been too young to be Jim Croce's anything. I just found out there is a new ice rink about half an hour from us, and while it isn't roller skating, it is goign to be really fun to doas a family. I wonder if it'll have that disticitve greasy pizza and old carpet smell that roller rinks had?

Hey I just found this discussion today, but I thought that I would add my two cents. My sister and I loved to watch Roller Derby ... we also watched WWF, but that's a different story all together! Any way recently my sister-in-law started skating in a Roller Derby League in the Grand Rapids area. I'm pretty sure that she's now my hero! She isn't a big girl, but she has dread locks and plays the part pretty well! I wish I lived nearby so I could see her in action!

I never went to a roller derby. It must have been a lot of fun. We usually go rollerskating with my brothers at a nearby park or with our friend in the neighborhood. It was a lot of fun. (^^,)

Those derby queens were sometimes scary, there is an old Rachel Welch movie called UMMM The Bomb I think it was she played the part fantastic, if you ever get the chance to catch it I think you would enjoy it.

It reminds me of my favorite movie, I don't know if we can call it a derby, but they are also always on rollerskates. I really love it especially when I was in my teens. "Xanadu" is the tile, with Olivia Newton John if I'm not wrong. I think that was the movie we watched with my siblings and inspired us to go rollerskates. ~~lol(^^,)
