Why is beer seen only as a working class drink???

I know family and friends who think beer is a white trash drink, or all women who drink beer are beer sl*ts... But to me, I get just as much enjoyment out of a good quality beer, served properly and matched with a decent meal, as I do with a decent bottle of wine. Probably more actually since it's usually cheaper;) So I suppose my question is this, to you, is beer a culinary experience or working class/ white trash drink? Or something in between.
