What Would You Have Done, What Do I Do Now?!?

Okay this is a particular long story. I was working with a company for two years and eight months before I quit... I've always prided myself in being an extremely hard worker. I like getting the job done! I usually only have to be told once when I make a mistake, and I learn not to do it again. About a year after I started working at my old job I started asking about benefits. I was told that I would have to work 30.00 hours a week to receive benefits. I was only working 29.75 hours, so I couldn't. Then the company started having problems with the turn around rate (obviously) and I was asked to visit different sites and work there as well as my regular scheduled hours. So I said okay, and did this for six months. Again I asked for benefits and instead of giving them to me they took some hours away. So I started looking for a new job, but I was in school and getting married so this was the perfect job to work around my schedule. In December I went to my boss and said I'm working 35 hours a week I need benefits. They put me on hold for about a month. In that month I announced to my co-workers that I was pregnant. This is why I really needed the benefits now. Things changed after this announcement. They asked me to work longer hours, alone (usually have a partner), and all of a sudden I was making countless mistakes (where there haven't been mistakes before). I was pulled into the office one day an accused of something for 1 hour in 30 minutes of something I didn't do. In the end I was crying, shaking, and extremely upset. I didn't admit to what they were saying I did. I didn't do it. I called my husband and he was extremely scared at first then upset. He told me to just quit, but I couldn't just quit. That afternoon we talked about me quitting my job and getting a new job. So I sent my boss an e-mail putting in my two weeks notice. Anyway, after I did that things got really bad. I to start doing the grunt work. Finally I just told them No, I will not do that!So here I am currently looking for a new job. I was hired last week pending my job history information. I didn't put my old boss' name down but some how my new boss got a hold of her. She told her that I wasn't a reliable worker, that they wouldn't hire me again, and that I was lazy. She said that I was disrespectful to her and argued all the time. Also that I liked to gossip. These are lies and cost me a really good job! What do I do? I worked my butt off at this company for almost three years. Keeping my nose down and staying out of trouble. I heard rumors before the incident that the owners were corrupt but I didn't pay attention. Turns out they've cost me six really good jobs. I just found out Friday this information. Now what? My girlfriend (who was a supervisor there) is going to let me use her number now as a reference for the company. But they need something to happen to them. One more thing. My last day, the head bosses told all staff not to throw me a good bye party (we usually do this for staff that has been there longer than six months). So my co-workers took me out to dinner instead. All of those that were at the party have been fired because they disobeyed an order. Isn't there a Federal Law or California Law that protects employees from all this abuse?

This is absolute madness! I'm simply outraged that this should happen to you. I've heard that many companies would rather not employ pregnant women, or women looking forward to having a family because of the benefits involved, but I'm surprised that it should go to such a level! I'm shocked that you've had to run into such dispicable humans and I still hope that most of the community isn't that corrup and disgusting. I sincerely hope you'll find a better job soon and that these people will learn from their mistakes. I'm from the US so I wouldn't know about which laws can protect you, but I'm pretty sure you could file a lawsuit against these people.

I don't know about a lawsuit. I think the pay out would be a lot less then the time invested. I do have letters of recommendation from that boss that said all those things, dated two weeks before I quit. I just don't know what to do with it. Right now I'm focusing on getting a part time job to help my husband pay the bills.

I would suggest you speak with a lawyer. It sounds like not only were you treated unfairly because of your pregnancy, but your old boss is defaming you. If you have people you could call on (ex-coworkers) that will corroborate your story, you may have a shot at a lawsuit.

Yes, I probably should speak with a lawyer. I just wish that I could win the lottery and buy out the company then fire them all... LOL Childish I know...

No, not childish. You're angry and it sounds like you have every right to be. Best wishes for your future!
