The Forbidden Fruit - fruit
India
February 27, 2007 3:21am CST
My parents adviced me to keep my wife who is a expecting mother now, to avoid jackfruit, papaya and pineapple. I was confused. Are the the fruits god had forbidden Eve in the garden of Eden? Has apple been wrongly named? Why are these fruits generally forbidden?

The two MOST reccomended fruits to eat while pregnant are papaya and pineapple. Both containe enzimes that help digestion. Less heartburn, constipation and general comfort. They arent forbidden at all, i think your parents have some outdated information. Im pregnant and saw my midwife today, and she encouraged me to make sure i eather eat a papaya or some pineapple before every meal to aid digestion.

I've never heard of any fruit which shouldn't be taken during pregnancy. I only think that one shouldn't be eaten too much. I remember when I was pregnant I wanted to eat some food a lot. For example, I ate too many cherries, so that my mom forbid me saying that too many berries won't do any good. She's right I think. You should consult with your doctor I think, if you are in two minds what diet you should follow. Good luck!

I have never heard of this before. When I was pregnant, my dr. recommended me eating pineapple everyday because of morning sickness. It can work to help get rid of morning sickness and being nauseous. I ate fresh pineapple daily. Sometimes canned, but only if I couldn't find fresh.

i think riped papaya cannot cause anything.but unriped may lead to contraction of uterus because of the chemicals present in that.Even there is also a common belief of not taking mangos also during pregnancy.but seasame seeds are believed to cause abortion. If elders are saying means then there will be some reason behind it.so try to follow them.

These fruits you mentioned have been known to cause voluntary abortion ( miscarriage ). It is not a scientific fact, but it has been known to happen after eating these particular fruits. Pineapple. If it doesn't give you heartburn, eating lots of pineapple is reputed to begin labor. Here is a good article about these fruits in general http://www.indiacurry.com/women/pregnancytaboo.htm Belief: Papaya, Jackfruit, Pineapple and Bananas are bad for the fetus Partially true The latex in the un-ripe Papaya can cause miscarriage. However, there is nothing wrong with fully ripened Papaya; or Jackfruit, Pineapples, and Bananas.

It seems to be from the culture of India. Look up taboo foods for pregnancy. here is a good website that tells some taboo foods and why they should not be eaten during pregnancy. www.mayoclinic.com/health/pregnancy-nutrition
