Lets say there are L number of old ladies and C number of cats. The number of heads will be. L + C = 22 The number of feet will be. 2L + 4C = 72 Multiply the first formula by 2 2L + 2C = 44 Substract this from the second formula 2C = 28 C = 14 So the number of cats are 14. Substitute this in the first formula. L + 14 = 22 L = 8 So there were 8 old ladies and 14 cats, provided there were no amputees.
