Yes I do usually turn to eating chicken noodle soup whenever I am sick. I also do believe that it does make a person get better rather fast. And I also do believe that it is an old remedy that is passed on to family members so that they can pass it on to the people whom they love in return. I know that whenever I am sick the first thing I tend to ask for whenever I am sick is chicken noodle soup, along with buttered toast, & of course orange juice! I do honestly believe that chicken noodle soup does work when a person is sick because.. It is rather nutritious but at the same time.. I have found whenever I sip chicken noodle soup or I have a bowl of chicken noodle soup that it helps to clear my sinuses whenever I am sick. I also have found that it helps to almost work as decongestant whenever I am sick. Which helps to eliminate my cold or flu symptoms rather quickly. I know that since I was younger whenever I was sick.. I would be brought chicken noodle soup to make me feel better. And it always seemed to bring a sense of comfort each & every time. Still to this very day now that I am a grown adult it still gives me that sense of comfort whenever I have a bowl of the home-made yummy chicken noodle soup that.. I either prepare or the people whom I love prepare for me whenever I become sick. I guess you could say it's one of those comfort foods for me whenever I become ill or begin to get flu or cold symptoms.. I've also heard that when you are ill or sick of any sorts that.. Your body begins to crave salt whenever you are ill. I think it's because your body is getting rid of the salt that you already have in your body. This usually happens through sweating or through the frequent urination that comes with being sick. I have also heard that salt enables the body to absorb fluids much more easily than if you we're to have a fluid without salt in it. I think another reason why I eat chicken noodle soup but also believe that chicken noodle soup helps to make you feel better afterwards.. Is because of the love that your mom, or even grandma or the person whom you love had put in to it.. Knowing that they we're willing to go out of there way to make you chicken noodle soup makes you feel special.. Because someone cares enough about you to go ahead & do this. It's not proven that chicken noodle soup does actually help a person to get better.. But I know due to my experience that.. I can believe that it is not an old wise tale or old wife's tale.. Because every time I have it makes me feel better. It helps me feel better because chicken noodle soup helps to lift my spirits when someone has put a little time & effort in to preparing it for me. I have also found that it gets rid of the aches my body may be experiencing while I am sick. I have found that it helps to make me feel like I have a little more strength so it enables me to not want to stay in bed all day long. But instead it makes me feel like I want to get some form of fresh air or at least walk around the house & go do something.. Instead of just laying in bed. In conclusion.. I know that chicken noodle soup is one of my favorite things to have whenever I am sick.. Every time I have a bowl of chicken noodle soup I do believe it has a positive effect on my state of mind.. But also the way I am feeling physically! . . Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

Naw, when I am sick I usually don't have any appetite at all. It takes effort just to make myself drink fluids throughout the day.

It is true that chicken soup helps. Not only does it contain triptophan to help you sleep but there is also another thing that helps strengtheh your immune response. I do not remember the name of it however. Besides any thing that makes you feel good and happy will help you heal faster and easier!!:):)

Yes, my friend Beckyomg1 -- and I need some right now!! I have a horrible cold and I am miserable :( -- Apparently, it has been proven that there is something in Chicken Soup that helps with a sick body. But for me it's the love behind it that is the healing touch, there is nothing like being sick, and chilled with fever, aches and pain then to have some loved one come in and give you a big bowl of steaming Chicken Soup, in bed with a gently smile and a warm touch. Wow! I feel better already, just thinking about it! Thanks see you around :) Best Wishes! OOHCUTE2340

We eat chicken soup when we get sick. Sometimes I sprinkle a little curry powder to help with congestion. I think it makes us feel better for a short amount of time. We drink lots of gatorade too.

No, I do not. I know they say it makes you better but I don't really like it and don't eat it.

I think it is a wives tale. Maybe way back when...when all the preservatives and sodium was not added to is. The veggies were boiled in the soup and the broth held the vitamins that were boiled out of the veggies. But I think that probably helped the most was the steam coming off of the soup. :) If you were sick, the steam coming from the soup would be inhaled and also help to make one feel better. If one had an upset tummy...the soup was bland enough to not make one bring the food back up for a second tasting. LOL So...maybe in some ways, it did help one to feel better. But I do not think it is a cure. Now...if you would have asked me if Mac and Cheese makes on feel better with sick...that would have been a total YES! LOL Just kidding....mac and cheese is my comfort food. :)

They actually claim that they've done studies that prove it is true. I'm not so sure I eat much of anything most of the time when I'm sick, let alone soup. However, I do love to make a good chicken soup for a cold wintery day!

I don't, because I'm vegan. The types of soups I like are spicy, so you can't eat them while sick. I heard because soup is so greasy, it's not good for you while you're sick. So that's probably just an old wives tale.

To be honest with you, I'm not sure if it is an old wive's tale or if there is some truth in it. Maybe it's good for you when you're sick because it provides fluid and vegetables, which contain vitamins. I tend to eat soup when I'm sick. Soup just tastes good when you don't feel well. I always have homemade soup in the freezer, so it may be chicken noodle, chicken vegetable, split pea, beef barley... whatever.

I thought chicken soup was a polish remedy, but I do remember several years ago reading that there was something to chicken soup helping you feel better when you are sick. There is the steam/moisture effect plus my guess is that many of the spices that go into chicken soup would help, some kind of herbal thing. I know I use a ton of spices, everyone loves my chicken soup, I make it all the time and I must admit, I have not had a cold in 2 years (Now watch tomorrow morning I wake up sick).

Yes I do and it does seem to make people feel better. I read a long time ago that chicken has an enzyme in it that combined with curry powder actually does work toward making you feel better and clear out the cold a little faster. All those Jewish mothers can't be wrong with the Jewish penicillin.

It's an old Jewish remedy. *lol* Every time we get sick in this house we whine and complain...then ask for two things: OJ and chicken noodle soup. Last time my hubby got sick, I made him home made chicken noodle soup. I'm proud to say he got better in no time. If anything, the steam from the soup along with the spices helps with the congested nose.

I believe it's an old remedy, it has worked and keeps working. I have no idea where it was started, but we make it with everything fresh and lots of vegetables, nothing canned. It's probably the most common recepy that is passed down every generation. Personally, I love it, it tastes good and makes me feel better and sleepy.
