A poet can not make a decent earning through writing poems. Then why do people write poems instead of finding a better job?.

I enjoy writing poetry and consider myself to be a poet also. However, I do not make any money from it, it is a passion and something that I enjoy to do. If I ever were to be published or make any money from my poetry, I would not depend on that income as my sole source of income. Rather it would be some extra money on the side that I acquired by doing something that I love to do.

You are right when you say that a poet can not make a decent living writing poetry, for most poets anyway. I write poetry because it is a form of release for me. Years ago, my poetry was dark and morbid, (some of it still is) but I also try to write poetry that will cheer me up to. Poetry is a very personal thing for people and I believe that most poetry is not even shared by the writer for others to see because of this.

I agree poets cannot make a decent living that is why most professional paid poets also teach or do some other occupation. I like to write poetry. I makes me a more concise writer. I enjoy putting poems together. I have shared my poems with family and friends but I have never sold any poems. Some poets just feel a need to write down the poem that is inside of them. Sometimes I want to write a poem but I just can't seem to put the words together right. At other times, the poem comes to me so fast I can not write fast enough to get it down. It is a truly exhilirating experience. I wish that it would happen more often. I teach which is another job that doesn't pay as well as others. I teach because I enjoy it so much. I believe that is why poets write poetry. They enjoy it so much.

I agree with you that pooet is not the best job to survive but passion in life is important and so you poets accept to have less money to write and be free. Usually they have anotehr job. The poets that really live without another job are few in the world.

Are you quite definite that not one poet who has lived or is living has made a decent earning of off writing poetry? Because I would think otherwise. Writing poetry is not a job, it is an art.

I would say it is because Poetry is a passion and when you are doing something you love and are passionate about, money isn't the driving force in your decission. It is true that not a lot of money can be made through poetry and I think that is really sad. It is a wonderful art form and it should be appreciated more. I think it also depends on what each person thinks a decent income is. For me, I don't even try to make money from my poetry, I just write it because I enjoy to write it.
