It is completely normal and you really can't stop it, but here are some ideas: Find a toy or stuffed animal or something he likes, and help him make a relationship with it. If he can learn to appreciate and enjoy something like that enough to be happy for a few minutes, I think that will help. Also, see if somebody else you know or another family member, preferable a young one, could play with him. If he has more than one favorite person he feels safe with, he'll be okay with them. He will become more independant as he gets older but he'll be attached for a few years, and it will be hard. Sometimes they fight sleep, so find a music playing box or something that rocks automatically that can help him go to sleep. A combination of both, along with you being infront of him while he falls asleep, should work.

Babies this young still miss the security of your womb. Do you have a little pouch (infant snuggler or other baby holder) that you can put him in where he can be close to your body warmth and hear your heart beat again? They also sell things at like Babies R US that sound like the womb. If you cannot afford those, some white noise (soft consistent noise) might help. Maybe his crib seems to big and scary to him. Do you swaddle him? That is another comforting thing to a baby that small. Makes them feel snug and secure. Hope these ideas help.
